Any tips/suggestions?

I'm in the process of fixing up my '89 IROC vert and need a complete exhaust system from manifolds back. Ideally, I'd have enough money and get some expensive headers to start, but maybe in a few years. Anyway, I'm planning on running a single 3" pipe (no cat) back to likely a flowmaster with standard dual outlets (2.5 I think??). Basically, I'm wondering if this would be a good setup for my 305 and also, I'll need to get a Y-Pipe. Where should I look to get one, probably used? It would need to have a 3" collector right? I'd really appreciate any and all input. Thanks!

rodie,

Well it depends... what do you plan on doing with your car? Daily driver?? Strip action??? Its all relative.

Oh sorry, I should have clarified.....
This will be my daily driver. I want it to flow and sound great but not be a cop magnet (not real worried about the latter). Also, while we're on the topic of exhaust, my O2 sensor is not hooked up. It's installed in the manifold but isn't connected to harness. Car seems to run fine without it, but I'm wondering if I'll lose any performance/mileage? I just know the TPI setup can be pretty sensitive.

The computer will set the vehicle to run rich constantly without the O2 sensor hooked up and working properly.

3" mandrel bent tubing should be just fine for a 305.

Oh wow, well I certainly want to take care of that if I can. Do you by any chance have a picture of the harness for it? Is there a pic on this site already? And about the pipe, I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have too little back-pressure. Thanks for your help dude .

forget flowmaster, ive spent hours on here researching cat backs, for what u want my opinion is scrap the cat and get a 3' hooker cat back. it will sound great and flow way better than flowmaster. and there 3" rolled tips look great, and in a couple years when u do headers it will sound even better.

I do certainly see your point and with my lack of experience, I'll never disagree. I'm just thinking that this car will likely never need to flow much better than it would because I just want to drive it and take care of it, not really race it or anything. If I can get a Y-Pipe, the exhaust shop will do it for around $300 (no cat; just Y-pipe and single 3" to muffler and out). How much would the system cost that you're suggesting? Is it a DIY? Thanks for your opinion, I'm still feeling things out.

Re: Any tips/suggestions?

jegs has it for just under $300, it looks great , flows great , and sounds awesome. i would have gotten that system if i didnt go with the borla. also u dont need a y-pipe. without headers. just buy the system take it to a shop they will put pipe in place of the cat and install it for about 150-225 dollars. anything more would be a ripoff. so for about $400 u get a great exhaust system.

Re: Any tips/suggestions?

Ok, well I'll have to take a look at it when I get a chance. I gotta run now, but thanks a lot for your input. If I can afford it (against my other fixes; paint, top, tires, electrical.....) I'll definitely consider it. Thanks again.
