Headers/ dual exhaust
Headers/ dual exhaust
I'm in the process of building an '89 RS up for track days and weekend cruiser and was wondering how hard it'd be running a set of true duals with long tube headers?
I'm planning on useing pipe from spintech as its more oval than round with a set of bullet style mufflers. Also planning on installing a crossover pipe and have it all dump out the sides, ala nascar style.
Right now it's running a 305 TPI/ auto which I plan to swap in either a 350 or 383 stroker and convert to a 5 speed.
This is my first post so I also like to say hey to everyone, look forward to getting to know the group better... anyone else from Ohio?

Re: Headers/ dual exhaust
Welcome to TGO. What long tubes are you planning on runnin? if you do a T-5 swap you will not be able to use hedman long tubes because the drivers side collector will hit the bell housing where the slave cylinder mounts up. I thought about doing the oval pipe from spintech but it was really expensive... I ended up going with shorties with a y pipe because i didn't want to lose the ground clearance with the true duals. even though you plan on running the oval pipe, your still going to have clearance issues if you want to do pipes coming right out in front of the rear tires. A good idea would be long tubes with a Y pipe, but put in an e-cutout and run a cat-back exhaust. What kind of sound are you looking for??
Re: Headers/ dual exhaust
Thanks for the welcome 86irocu.
The sound I'm looking for is somewhat mellow driving normal i.e., wife in car, but throaty when on the throttle. I would like to be able to drop the exhaust if I ever take it to the dragstrip, or atleast put a less restrictive set up on it.
As far as running a cat on it, where I live theres no testing required so I'm alittle more open to run any exhaust I can fit under it. And I probably won't be doing the tranny swap for a year or so, so that won't be a problem for the time being.

Re: Headers/ dual exhaust
Im from SE Columbus and im trying to do the same thing to my 91. I just boght a Dual cat setup off eBay for $90 shipped and that will help out a lot. I originally planned to go the stock routing with chambered mufflers where the crossflow is now. I thought of this when I was doing a 69 Camaro model then it was a confirmed good idea when I saw how good looking ****** turned out. But I was doing a search for quick exhaust leak fix when i came accross these sidemount inserts from Hooker. http://www.holley.com/21046HKR.asp I was thinking i might be easy to run them along the undercarriage by the driveshaft so I dont have to worry about muffler placement and ground clearance. Does nyoe have any experience with them. Ive got a street car that will see some track time so it cant be too loud but i definetly want people to hear me coming too.

Re: Headers/ dual exhaust
What i'm currently running right now is a magnaflow cat back exhaust sys. i have hedman shorties with a Y pipe. All my ehxaust is 3" back over the axle. I have one 3" QTP Exhaust cutout. The e-cutout is amazing. I noticed better 1/4 times with the cutout open. The cutout is the least restricting. as for mellow.. The magnaflow is pretty mellow till you hit WOT. I can get some sound clips of both if you would like. Just let me know.
