longtubes or shorties?

ill be building and putting in a 400+hp/tq 355 into my 3rd gen soon, probably not til winter though. i currently have (in box, not installed) a set of flowtech shorties 1 5/8" with 2.5" collector. ive seriously contemplated selling the shorties and going with hedman longtubes straight into purple hornies. i figured id save some money going with the longtubes seeing as how id have to redo the entire exhaust for the shorties which would include a custom y-pipe and a cat-back exhaust, about $400 best case scenario, not including the $95 i paid for the shorties (stock exhaust is 2.25"). but ive also thought about lowering the car an inch and a half or so and i doubt id be able to do that with the longtubes. i love how the purple hornies sound but i also love the smooth deep tone of a flowmaster or any other stock-ish muffler. i can live with not lowering the car. this is all basically about trying to get the most bang for the buck.

Re: longtubes or shorties?

You can use shorties but the 1 1/2 primaries are going to be way to small if you are going to make that much power.

A better option would be the hooker shorty headers w/ y pipe. They are 1 5/8. A lot of people use them on this board and are happy with them.

The best option, IMO, would be to pick up a set of SLP 1 3/4 headers.

Good luck.

Re: longtubes or shorties?

the ones i have are 1 5/8" primaries. i dont really wanna mess with getting another set of shorties. so its either what i have or longtubes basically. if i can get an ENTIRE exhaust system (headers, y-pipe, i-pipe, muffler and tips) in one for one price id do that, but buying them in pieces and finding people to do the work is too hard. i can do longtubes myself, but welding is something id have to pay someone to do. if i had the money id get a GMMP cat back but $850 is too much to spend on half an exhaust.

Re: longtubes or shorties?

Did you edit your post? The first time I read it i swore it said you had 1 1/2 primaries. Maybe I drank to much last night.
