New Magnaflow Exhaust

So I just bought a new magnaflow cat back today for my 91 rs. When i started it up and gave it a few revs it didnt really sound aggresive. they guy told me that after a week or so, it gets better and gets nastier as far as the sound, so i figured maybe it needs a break in? and the smell of the new tubes and muffler STINKS after driving it around, but i was told its only for a few days. does anyone out there have the same thing as me? or experience the same? fill me in please. if not Ill probably switch to flowmaster. thanks guys.

Magnaflow's arent that loud. They sound good without being obnoxious like a Flowmaster.

They do change sound a little bit, so give it time.

Re: New Magnaflow Exhaust

I have heard of people making packed mufflers louder by either taking a blowtorch to the case to melt the stuffing, or putting gas in it and lighting a match to blow the stuffing out.

But basically those mufflers dont so much break in, as they constantly change tone as they get older. Also, the new exhaust smell lasted about 3 weeks on my last car.

I have a Magnaflow on my 84 with a 305, Hooker headers no cat and 3" exhaust. Is very quite at idle, surprised me at first, I was expecting it to be louder. You can really hear it when accelerating, or opening it up on the highway. The new smell lasted a couple weeks.

sure no problem, but dont get me wrong, the performance is pretty dam good. i can instantly feel the difference. the guy at the place told me that its a 100% flow through while the flowmaster is about 85% either way, i guess its all personal preferance. but im thinking of getting the 40 series FM's cuz I hear they are the loudest...show those fart cans how a real muffler supposed to sound. oh the place is called budget muffler & break its on el cajon and 47th street. the guy was cool he told me if i dont like the magnaflow to come back in a few weeks and he'd hook me up with a flowmaster.

Re: New Magnaflow Exhaust

I have a magnaflow exhaust too and mine is VERY loud when i'm on it, but at idle its a little louder than factory. The way mine is setup is: Headman shorty headers to y-pipe, in place of cat i have a magnaflow 3" magnapack and then 3" piping all the way out with a single hidden pipe on the passenger side. Like i said very quiet at idle, what i call stealth mode, but when i get on it, the car screams.
