Stock Muffler
I was under the car a while ago, and happened to tap my muffler with the wrench. It made a dull thud. This surprised me, because I thought being a stock muffler it wouldnt be a dull thud, more like a hollow clank. Are the factory mufflers packed, like a magnaflow or dynomax? If so, could I use a torch to heat the muffler and make the packing melt?
Here is the exact sound I am looking for:

Re: Stock Muffler
Well maybe you can help me with this question then. On the inlet to the muffler, there is what appears to be a band clamp holding the muffler onto the I-pipe (or the other way around maybe). However, I dont see any split in the metal to proove that they are not one piece!
If I loosen that clamp, and the one rearward hanger, could I slip the whole muffler and tips right off? If I could do that, I would get the exhaust shop to fab me up a y-pipe and some tailpipes that would be welded together, but slip over the I-pipe just like the muffler.
I just dont want to do anything real permanent because if I get in trouble with the cops, I need to be able to go back to stock. Plus my dad doesent like loud mufflers.

IIRC, my factory muffler wasn't welded to the I-pipe. If I'm understanding your question right, you want to get rid of the muffler completely and your exhaust to look something like this?

(Another member's car. Hope he doesn't mind.)
You could just keep the muffler on and put an exhaust cutout before the muffler. That would give you the sound you want and the ability to make it quiet again with the flip of a switch.

That is alot more complicated than I wanted. Eventually, I will get a whole exhaust system - 2055's 3"cat and flowmaster 3" catback. But that is expensive and a while coming. I just wanted something to get r loud so I can hear my v8.
I got the idea because my buddy with an F-150 triton v8 just got rid of his flowmaster 40 for a straight y pipe, and it sounds sick. So I found that video of a 305 without a muffler and that sounds sick too!

Re: Stock Muffler
Heres a better picture of what I was talking about:

It looks like the clamp would make the muffler section removable. However, the pipes dont slip over each other like would make sense. I would expect one to be expanded, and the other to slip inside.
The only other things I can think are that it is either welded and that clamp was for assembly line purposes, or the tubes butt together flush, and the clamp seals them.
It must be on there pretty good, because only one tailpipe is hung. The other is free floating with the muffler.
