Oxygen sensor Q: How far from head??
Oxygen sensor Q: How far from head??
Guys.. i just put custom long headers on my 1989 350 TPI. the thing is.. i don't know exactly what distance from the head do i need to put the oxygen sensor? Is the distance really crucial?
Thanks.
Thanks.

It's typically put in the manifold outlet, or header collector.
Why do you have a choice?

Re: Oxygen sensor Q: How far from head??
I put this engine on my Jeep Wrangler and i had to get custom made long headers. I have plenty of room to put anywhere i need to. I just don't know if i must to put the O2 sensor within certain distance?? Someone told me that if i put it too far/too near it would affect the way my engine performs..
So.. is this true?

Re: Oxygen sensor Q: How far from head??
doesn't really matter, it wont effect the way it perfroms because it measures in parts per million. the closer to the head it is the faster it will go into closed loop. the oxygen sensor on my honda was 3 inches from the head in the number 2 primary, i got aftermarket headers to move it to the collector so it wouldn't obstruct the primary as much, so now its about 3 feet from the stock location and it only takes 30-60 seconds longer before it goes into closed loop. i say put it right after the collector.

The closer it is to the head, the hotter it will get. The hotter it gets, the more accurately it will work. If you have a long-tube header, use a heated (3 wire) oxy sensor.

Mine's in the collector of my hedman long tubes.
Doesnt work all that well. Car runs strong, but it idles real high and my readings on my Air/Fuel Ratio gauge (narrowband, so it sees exactly what the ecm sees) are drastically different than what it used to get.
Fortunately for me, I dont really care since I got a new, carbureted motor going in.
However, the easy fix is to just get a heated O2 sensor, then you can put it in the collector and not worry about it. But since I got a carb motor going in I decided to save some money and skimp on the heated O2 sensor for hte time being.
