Exhaust leak (headers) ?

well...drove my 92 z28 on the freeway little faster than posted speed limit and something went wrong have this noise coming from the motor driver side not exactly sure but first thought my motor went to **** then while driving back home, noticed the sound more like an exhaust leak, since it only was making loud sounds when applying more pressure on the gas, otherwise it drove good w/o any noise, also seemed like it even backfired somewhere in the front when drove on 1st and second gear, headers bolts are tight so im not sure where it could even leak from and specially to backfire if anyone have any idea what it could possibly be, thnx in advance.

Re: Exhaust leak (headers) ?

Did you redline the engine at all? Did it just do this while maintaining speed or under heavy acceleration? It could be exhaust... but if you don't smell it I'd be skeptical of that diagnosis. You could have bent a valve, broken a spring, spun a bearing... just about anything in the valvetrain could be busted.

Run the engine and see if you can smell exhaust coming from the front of the car... get under the car and inspect the whole exhaust. If that all checks out, you should check out the noise with a stethescope or if you don't have one, a screwdriver on the head. Pull off the valve cover while it's running and look to make sure everything is running well... oil coming out of the pushrods, springs operating correctly etc.

I'm no expert, that's just what comes to mind first... maybe somebody else has a better guess.

Re: Exhaust leak (headers) ?

i could have red lined the motor, i cant be sure cuz my tachometer is off, as well as the speedometer i was in my 5th gear on a T5 and by the sound it didnt sound like it redlined and also car kept pulling forward without any prob (was over approx 130mph) i'll go ahead and check for the signs you mentioned and even if it is exhaust which i hope it is what could possibly happen under those conditions to the headers or y pipe(assuming thats the area where the noise is coming from) thanks for the reply

My best guess on exhaust would be that you heated up the exhaust manifolds and subsequently the y-pipe enough to weaken an already rusty part of the y-pipe and some extra pressure blew a hole in it... Heat can accelerate the rate at which metal rusts and weaken it. It's always possible there's a crack in the manifold, but probably less likely than getting a hole in another part of the exhaust.
