Exhaust Termination Boxes/Resonator

I'm starting this thread for a couple of reasons. One because Orr89RocZ thread has become quite interesting and I believe some parts should have their own thread. Another reason is that I and others on this board believe that there is untapped horsepower to be had in a good tuned exhaust system. The terminator boxes should act like open air if done properly.

This is hard to accomplish with 3rd Gens and use smog legal shorty headers and with cats in the factory location. I have drawn up something I think will work and have attached the drawing for criticism.

The exhaust system is based on criteria from David Vizard and Larry Meaux and his program PipeMax. The actual dimensions are based on my motor combination and yours may vary slightly. For instance I have my motor set for peak power at around 5800-5900 rpm with a max shift point of 6400rpm. So my rpm range will be higher then most on this board.

The terminator box criteria is from David Vizard. He states that you need a minimum of 8 times the cubic inches of one cylinder. This is for one bank of cylinders. So for my 355 cubic inch motor I would need one terminatior box of 710 cubic inches or two boxes of 355 cubic inches. I went with the two boxes of 355 cubic inches each.

He also says it is preferable to have a 2" pipe connecting the two boxes. I have incorporated the connecting tube into my design.

You also need a good free flowing exhaust. You need a minimum of 2.2 cfm per the horsepower your motor makes. I designed this system to handle up to 500hp through the catalytic converters. One square inch of exhaust pipe flows 115cfm.

According to PipeMax my motor needs a 2 3/4" collector pipe 18.5" long. This is with 100% VE.

In order to do it this the way I have designed it you would need a tubular K-member. I would switch to a mini starter. If you are running long tubes Orr89RocZ has a nice sketch as to how he would do that method on his post. Here is the sketch.

Edit: I would have everything from the header connection to and including the termination boxes coated with a ceramic thermal barrier. In my case I would use the black color.
