Re: HELP! please!!
No muffler will cause such a deficit in backpressure that it would take away power... Most of the backpressure in a system is caused by the pipes in front of the muffler. Ideally you want zero backpressure and no stagnation, which means using just the right sized pipe. Anything between 2.25" and 3" would probably be fine for a stockish V8.
Two things come to the top of my head with the assumption that this car has a few miles on it... a clogged cat or a bad timing chain. The first thing you should do though is a tune up... wires, plugs, dist cap, air filter and oil change.
To answer your question about replacements...
If you want a quiet muffler, maybe look at Hooker Aerochambers or if you're looking for something loud but an actual muffler... Flowmaster 40 series. If the noise of the cherry bomb doesn't bother you, leave it because it's not the culpret of your power issue.

Re: HELP! please!!
You only have a 2.8 V6!! I think your problem is the lack of 2 cylinders IMHO.
Let me say this before I get flamed. I used to have a car with a 3100SFI FWD, which is supposed to be better than even the old 2.8 and 3.1.
That car, absolutely could not get out of its own way. Sooo slow. And everything on it was working great. My lowly LO3 is 100x faster than that 3100. So dont expect a 2.8 to be fast like a V8 camaro.

Re: HELP! please!!
you olny gain a little more tq by having a muffler over an open exhaust, i know running headers, dual 2 1/2's and a cherry bomb on each pipe...on a 454 with no lost powerthe cat is more than enough back pressure, im running all 3in with a flow 80 and no cat, 100X's better than stock
but to solve the root of the problem he needs to check out his EGR issues, its really easy to clean or replace

Re: HELP! please!!
thanks for all the answers i cleaned my EGR valve the other day with carb cleaner it didnt look to dirty im going to check my vacuum lines and EGR selinoid tomorow if i have time. another question if my vacuum lines are clogged could that cause the EGR valve to not function properly?
