welcome Kent.

on my 84.
i ran hedman long tubes, hedman s bends, summit H pipe and dynomax bullets. all 2 1/2". it sounds nasty as hell. its being finnished right now.

i will assume that u are planning a nice motor swap to justify the 3" pipes.

no motor swap at the moment but maybe in the future, is 3" too much? is 2.5" better for stock motor

Re: recomendation for true duals on a 305 v8 tbi

well. some will say that 3" is just fine and most will say that it will kill ur bottom end. i am one of those. it will hurt ur bottom end. mainly b/c u have a 305. i ran 2.5" dual on my H.O. i plan on goin with a built 350 or a 383. and 2.5" is all i will do. if u were putting down 400-450 at the wheels 2.5" would be more than enough. 500 and more then go up to 3". imo. i am only planning on having about 450 max at the wheels. prolly more like 400. so 2.5 is good for me.

so if u plan on building a motor in the near future then goahead and put the 3" on. i put my exhaust on with the notion of how much h/p i wanted to end up with. besides ground clearence is always an issue especially with 3"and up.
Jay.

hey well i have a 305 tbi and im going with that new magnaflow cat back exhaust, its not duals but it does have 3 inch pipe, its just like the stock exhaust but 3 in. do you think that will hurt my bottom end.

no not at all. when it comes to flow #'s 3" single flows just as much as 2.5" duals. u will be fine.

A single 3" aftermarket cat-back is all you will need for a TBI engine. Dual exhaust is just overkill and more expense than its worth.

Pick your own muffler, they're all pretty similar in flow, only the sound is different.

yes Kevin is right. i would have to add it up but i might be over of what it would cost to do full header and 3" c/b.

which basically, not only makes me the president of the more money then brains club, but the now i'm broke b/c of it club.

but i love my dual set-up.

While dual is a little overkill for 305, I disagree with the price point. I got 2-1/4 duals for my 305 TPI, only $350 or so from Jegs (Inc. headers) , so it's not expensive at all.

That, and it's WAY quieter than any 3" exhaust would be. I'm a fan of "if it's loud, it had better be DAMN fast" Mine is neither.

3" duals would have to be custom fabricated. 3" tubing is significantly more expensive than 2-1/4", and harder to handle. If you want mandrel bends, that raises the cost even more. Ground clearance will be nonexistent.

I doubt your 2-1/4" duals are quieter than my single 3". Doubt it flows any better, either.

A single production-line, readily available 3" exhaust makes sense in every way for the stated application.

(FWIW, I'm running 2-1/2" duals on the '57, and I'm confident it's putting out more power than any 305 TBI out there.)

My bad, not to thread-hijack, but in my searches when I was looking for a 3" system I could not find any mufflers which people agreed were really quiet, could you perhaps post some links to what you have?

My story:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...crossflow.html

The Magnaflow link I posted in that thread isn't sending you to the right place. It's a Magnaflow 11229, 4x9 oval, 3" offset in, 3" center out, 3" mandrel bend exhaust pipe. Nice mellow sound, has some authority when you get on it, no tininess at all.

sorry, but i wouldn't even waist my time on a 2 1/4" dual setup. i have 2 1/2" and i love it. but hey to each his own. if it works for u then thats good enough for me.
