cat?

Hay all, I have to take my car in for inspection here in Ohio since I bout it in Michigan. my question is do I have to have a catalatic converter?
It's an 89 camaro rs so it would have come with one from the factory.

It's not vary loud since the exhaust is stock besides having no cat. I would hate to loose the only v8 rumble I got.lol

Thanks -Tony

Re: cat?

If you have a visual test you will fail but if its just the sniffer then you might pass

Re: cat?

Its very tough to pass the sniffer without a cat.

Plus its required by federal law that you have one, since the car came with one.

Re: cat?

agreed, you're not going to pass any emissions test with a used thirdGen without a cat. It will never pass the sniffer.

Re: cat?

yeah they where telling me at the DMV to take it to the Chevy dealership to have the inspection done, So I got a felling they will put it up on a lift and take a look at my undercarriage.lol

Oh well I seen I can get a nice high flow cat on summit for about $60 dollars shipped. I think I'll just play it safe and order one that way I don't ever have to worry about it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Re: cat?

@ TA: Not true, buddy of mine had a stock cat and exhaust, the dirtiest air cleaner ever, no oil change in 25000 miles, when we removed his intake manifold the passages were caked and blocked with sludge (after emissions test)...

He passed easily....this was also without smog hooked up.

HOWEVER, my brothers freshly rebuilt to stock, headers, full exhaust with cat, new fluids, new intake, o2 sensor and tune...(leaned specifically to pass), didnt pass.

We ended up adding 98% alcohol to his gas and that gave him the (30-40 points) needed to pass.

and

My completely fin Z31 V6 fully stock, new cat, o2, intake full tune-up the works...didn't pass.

My 89 camaro, no smog (tubes removed, cat plugged), clean car....passed.

So to me, I think its a hit or miss sometimes...that and I have had it where 2 different places gave me readings a good 100 points different from each other...in the same day...so yeah.

Get a cat...then afterwards (after you pass), replace with test pipe, easily changed, back to loud.

It's got a 79 350 so I have no smog pump or lines I'll have to plug the line on the cat, I hope they don't make a big deal out of that.

I'm going to order my cat Friday. I was thinking of going with a magnaflow cat off summit, y'all think that would be OK or should I just get a stock replacement, I would like the exhaust to flow a little better than stock.

Re: cat?

If you plan to rid of the cat after you pass, just get a stock replacement or one of the same size and the cheapest you can.

But if you plan to keep a cat, Magnaflow is what I am going with...polished too...haha

This is the cat I will be buying....you dont need to get polished but my whole exhaust will be

NOTE: This version (Part Number 94309) is the one without air tube, picture shown is with same one but with air tube.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...part=MPE-94309

There are even cheaper versions....and this one is 49 state legal...good for me.

Re: cat?

here is the one I was thinking of going with.... Mainly because it is the cheapest and should flow better than a stock cat would. I'm going to keep it on Just so I know the car will be legal.

I have headers and a flow master muffler with stock size piping so my exhaust should flow a little better than stock.

here's a funny thing a stock cat would cost me $89 and the Dynomax is only $57.

Re: cat?

that is the better cat wwd. it is 3" in and out and will not create back pressure if you have a 3" collector and 3" pipes.

Lets hope amazon doesnt mix it up with the California type converter Part # 94006CA....as some places dont designate the CA...

If so what could be different from a CA converter than a 49state converter? Do the CA cats burn more toxins up or something?

Re: cat?

No, the only difference is CA makes the manufacturers submit their products to an additional test that costs more money. The cats are fine as they are made but CA's air quality management district doesnt have anything better to do.

That might be your problem - CATs work best at stoich. Leaning out your AFR just makes things worse.

Can someone else verify this? If so then, haha to me. But you learn something new everyday...especially with cars.

Re: cat?

Leaning out the fuel mixture does make the exhaust burn hotter (glowing headers, anyone?). The higher temps could make the cat fail.
