Re: Delete cat to make exhaust louder?

Well, 90% of all of those things above are done to most any and all race car, so... what? Do Race cars not give off emissions? What's the difference between Emissions from 200 Race cars goin 100+mph in a circle or down a strip, and 200 street cars sitting on the interstate or 35mph in a Neighbourhood? See what I'm sayin'? Despite these stupid laws, the 'Ozone' or w-e is still "in danger"...
I think it's all BS, but... I have to conform to the Laws these crippled old men throw at us anyways... but, Evidently, if you're racing, you don't...

Eh, happens all the time. Just

If you really want to start the flames, post something like, "I want to stroke my 305 to a torque-monster 335 and remove the cat and all that smog crap. Which synthetic oil should I use?" That'll get things hopping.

Re: Delete cat to make exhaust louder?

From NYS DMV Brochure on Emissions inspection....

Some vehicles are exempt from the emissions inspection program: Your passenger car or light truck does not have to be inspected for emissions if it is:
  • Less than two model years old;
  • 26 model years old or older;
  • Registered with historical plates; or,
  • Electric-powered only.

So my '82 is exempt.....needs to pass safety only

Exempt from TESTING part only, or 100% exempt...Meaning you can just rip off all the FEDERALLY REQUIRED equipment?

Here in TX, I know we're exempt from TESTING, after 24 years, but it doesn't mean the stuff cam simply be removed. It still has to BE there, just no more sniffer test.

Or like me....I moved to a non-emissions test county.

Integrity, even if your car is not going to be checked, you should do whats right by keeping it environmently safe. They rely on your honesty to keep it clean.

Re: Delete cat to make exhaust louder?

there is no sniffer test in NY(there is in NY City, but not the rest of the state), they plug the computer into the OBDII socket, if you have a check engine light on, or all the monitors are not set, the vehicle fails.

And who is going to enforce these "Federal" emissions laws?

ive never heard of anybody getting a ticket citing any kind of Federal emissions law.

I never implied anything was OK to remove. I'm not even required to be tested, but my car is CLEAN.

2 years ago was my last emissions test & they were scratching their heads & commenting how CLEAN my 20 yr old (emissions results) were.

Dont worry im not taking it that you said removing things is ok. I think you should be able to do what you want with your car, but as long as you keep the emmissions at or below standard, you should be able to remove/add what you want.
For example, you remove AIR, but still have a cat, and you test emmissions and pass the sniffer or whatever your good to go.

Cut the visual inspections, just take the readings from the tailpipe and if they're good, your good. Im confusing myself too lol

No.....You make perfect sense. My wife tried to get changes made to the emissions testing here in TX, when she was the "semi-big cheese"....She wasn't a big ENOUGH cheese to get any changes made.

But your right.....If the TRUE goal (not to raise revenues) is to get clean air.....Why even open the hood? Stick the sniffer in...Pass or Fail...Simple as that. It shouldn't matter if you have the "correct" engine & equipment, or a roots blown 572 big block sticking through the hood. As long as it passes...Put a sticker on the car...NEXT!

That's always been my biggest gripe about testing...The deetails of HOW you can pass.

I knew a guy once that had a single cat 3rd gen....He swapped to an OEM dual cat set-up. But it wasn't even available on his car (like a '85 or something.....wrong year).

Anyways.....

He passed the sniffer, but was denied the sticker, because of "illegal equipment".

So he went home, put the stock single cat back on, got retested.....
Sniffer #s went UP, but still under the limit.......
You guessed right. He got his sticker, even though his car was WORSE output!

Now THATS F'ed up! Pass people by making their car worse.......

BTW....When I got my car, the smog pump was totally disconnected. Not even a pulley on it. Still passed.

Thanks Matt
Matt to answer your question, Yes your exhaust will be louder.

As for the first few that replied initially, remember, simple and
straight to the point is usually the best way to avoid all out
flame wars.

~nough said.

The very question, which you quoted, contains a statement which implies something that is incorrect. State emissions aren't the issue, Federal law is.

Setting the record straight does not a flame war make.

Re: Delete cat to make exhaust louder?

Ok we have seen just about every kind of advocate for removing the pollution control equipment and every tree hugger is up in arms telling everyone that it will save the world by keeping all the emissions installed. Hmm!!! my exhaust consists of hookers 2210's to a mufflex y pipe to a 4 inch pipe w/ NO CAT'S to a spintech exhaust. It has no exhaust restrictions and no power loss. I only got 10mpg before and hasn't changed since the new engine.. So what about they synthethic oil anyway??? LOL.. I think we have beat this subject to death.

actualy backpressure is nessicary on most stret cars to optimize efficincy, YOU WILL MAKE LESS POWER ON A OTHERWISE STOCK ENGINE IF YOU GO WITH STRAIT PIPES/ OPEN HEADERS.

now if your engine has an aftermarket cam with a tighter LSA and more duration, yes, it will help to relieve backpressure.
