Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Anybody have an exhaust paint they like to use to keep there exhaust from rusting? I just want to wire brush my flowmaster, sand it a bit and paint it to keep it from rusting. because everyone knows what a flowmaster exhaust looks like after a couple years.

Thanks

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Yes that would be the smart thing to do. But I bought my car three years ago with a flowmaster catback and its in pretty good shape. Although it is starting to rust where it was welded together. I have seen people use the rustoleum but never saw the aftereffects. Thanks for the heads up on that. I see other high temperature paints but they all say "must be cured at 400 degrees for couple hours." And who has an oven big enough to heat exhaust tubing? Definitely not me... I just want to keep my catback from turning into the famous flomaster tetanus series...

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Hey how about caliper paint? I used some duplicolor caliper paint on my sled with EGTs of 1250 degrees, the can says its only good to like 600 but mine is good yet, it also has ceramic in the paint. Just throwing that idea out there

No problem! I got my paint at napa, IIRC it's like $7-$8 a can.

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

I finally got around to painting my exhaust with gloss black caliper paint yesterday and it looks great. But so far it seems to have cured very nice. Thanks for the idea.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, just wondering how the caliper paint is holding up on the exhaust. Great idea

BTW, Flowmaster sells stainless steel systems too.

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Exhaust looks sick! I just painted my new headers with KBS High Temp Aluminum paint. Just got the headers in, havent installed everything else yet, so its not cured. But, if it looks as clean as that, I'd be very happy.

It lasted about 8 months and then flaked off...So now my next try is rust converter than high temp exhaust paint.

That's good to know that flowmaster sells stainless steel exhaust. Hopefully I wont have to pick one up for a long time though.

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

It would cool to hear how your aluminum paint holds up down the line. I know my friend painted his exhaust manifolds with aluminum paint and its still looks good years after.

Headers are a great upgrade. They change the exhaust note a lot.

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Yeah did the Hedman headers to a Magnaflow cat, then to a Magnaflow catback. Hopefully it sounds and looks good. I'll let people know how the paint cures and I'll try to shoot some pics of how it looks down the line.

That's discouraging haha.

edit: Did you drive it in winter weather/rain or is it caged during those months?

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

Stephen

I was thinking about doing that. I think this Summer I will get back under there and finish what I started.

wilkink

Pictures are always good!

No cage for my car. It gets a taste of everything. Salt, rain, sand, mud. It pretty much gets driven 3 times a week 60 miles a day back and forth to college. Its just to much fun to not drive.

ILLIROC89

That's awesome!

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

I'll try to get some up once it cures. I havent even started the car yet, so the paint still has a few brush marks on it. I'll let you know how it goes though.

Re: Anyone have an exhaust paint recommendation?

i painted m headers with some rattlecans i picked up from autozone. its called VHT (very high temp) and it was designed for use on headers/exhaust. its rated to 2000 degrees and works great. hasnt flaked or burnt off yet and i painted them about a year ago.

Well I suppose that could be the reason it flaked off salt is a bitch!
