I have a 1992 Camaro RS with a stock 305 and y-pipe exhaust. I am planning on putting a new cat-back system on it but i dont know what will sound the best. I want it to have a really deep loud throaty sound. I was thinking the flowmaster American Thunder series. I also thought about putting glasspacks on it but i heard they were crap?
any suggestions??
thanks

A dynomax bullet would suit you nicely, I'd also stay away from 3". I have one on my car from when I was 17 and regret not doing a 2.5". a 3" is too much exhaust for a 305, I had more low end with the stock exhaust.
Is there any difference in sound between 2.5 inch and 3 inch exhausst?

I too have wondered if three inch is too much for a 305. Some forums on here say that you should always go three inch and there is other people i talk to say to not. I have always been told that the quicker you get the exhaust out the better?!?!

There is, but I'm not quite sure how to describe it.Originally Posted by wesrams1

This is true, but because of the low compression and low flow of the heads on a TBI (depending on if you have a TBI car) a 3" won't do much. It might help if you have a set of headers. Unless you plan on camming the car and putting a new set of heads on it a 2.5" will do fine. Just open your mouth really wide and breathe out, then squeeze your lips together and do the same thing. You'll see what I'm talking about.Originally Posted by newts25th

I was going to do the full tubes to a 3 inch pipe but not sure that is the right way to go anymore. I really want to do a side exit.
Magnaflow 3" Cat-back system.
One of the best sounding catbacks for our cars. It's a 3" system thats all mandrel bent, excellent flow and sounds pretty damn good. It won't give you that drone sound you would get from the Flowmaster system and it also won't be uber loud with just part throttle cruising. Once you step on the pedal however, it will come alive and everyone will know your coming. It's all stainless steel as well, so it won't rust out on you. It's a direct replacement for your stock system so you won't have to change hangers or anything. I also suggest you get some nice headers and Y-pipe. If you want to stay smog legal, get some Hooker 2055's. Amazing fit and finish and they also have a Y-pipe made for them. With both of these aftermarket goodies along with a free-flowing 3" Magnaflow cat; your exhaust will sound amazing and flow like a dream. Do a search on this board to find others who have this catback and see what your thoughts are.

Go to www.hottexhaust.com and make an offer for the system there, i just made the lowest offer possible and they gave it to me for $347. The normal price on their site is $433.Originally Posted by wesrams1

i agree that 3in pipe may be a bit of overkill for the stock 305 t.b.i, but if you are planning a cam/heads/intake/headers - hi-flo cat or 350c.i. or larger swap in the future... go with 3in. no since in doing the exhaust twice. plan and make changes for what your needs will be. and spend your money wisely, with todays economy you have to
yeah, i plan on doing a top-end rebuild so maybe it would be a good idea to get 3"

2.5" is plenty large for the 305. As for the exhaust note you want have you checked out the Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler?
no ive never heard of the cherry bomb vortex
Don't waste your time with band-aid mufflers and such. If you plan on keeping this car and have plans for upgrades, get a 3" Magnaflow system. You will not regret it. Once you start getting into high horsepower if ever, then start to think about a big flowing system.
you would reccomend the magnaflow 3" system over the flowmaster? im not really sure which one is better
Flowmaster is all noise. No flow, annoying drone with cruising etc. Magnaflow is 10x better IMO.

in my experience the 80$ flowmaster 80 series is the exact same as a 20$ Checker Cherry bomb. Exact same sound, drove the same. I wont buy flowmaster again.

i have a 305 in my camaro put 2460 hooker shorty headers, hookers y pipe with 3" inlet and 2.5" outlet into a 80 series flowmaster with 2.5"inlet and 2.5"outlet and it sounds amazing and can see a big difference in throttle response but as other people said your best bet is to research videos of good quality hear all the exhaust systems and choose witch one you like
