Flowmaster?

Hey guys,
I'm going for a new exhaust for better sound.
My friend currently has nearly the same exhaust on his v6 camaro and it sounds pretty decent with a nice aggressive loud tone.

depends on what he wants. Do you want sound? Or do you want flow and quality? If you want the agressive sound, go with flowmaster, if you want a quite exhaust that flows much better, go with magnaflow, magnaflows depending on the vehicle and motor vary, some third gens are great exhaust tones and sounds, but they will never be as loud as flowmasters on a third gen thats stock.

Is your 305 heavily modded? If not, go with what you think sounds the best. One system isn't going to give you big gains over another.

Yea i know the difference in power adding between flowmaster and magnaflow but yet again guys i only have my 305 in. The 350 is sitting in the garage b/c i still haven't been able to by all the parts to switch.

So im going for sound, maybe gives me an extra mile or two per gallon lol.
Been around flowmaster sound all my life and i like it, just hoping it will sound good on the 305 for now.

You guys are always a big help.

He mite be looking for a loud agressive tone, you cant get that with magnaflow, especially since he said its a stock 305. Flowmaster wont flow as well as magnaflow, but magnaflow doesnt put down the noise level though.

I've grown out of the whole sound thing, I go with what flows best, ironically, flowMASTERS are crap. Which is why I'll be going with a Dynomax in the future. They're just about the best flowing mufflers that money can buy, able to support 2,000 horsepower and flow 2,000 SCFM.

Wow. As it was said before, get what you think sounds the best. You cannot argue an opinion such as how good something sounds. Something is not crap just because you don't like it. Picking a muffler you do not think sounds the best, to save .1 on your 1/4 time, (if that) is just plain silly. But when you get to 2,000 horsepower, go with the Magnaflow for sure, because it will support it...

I completely respect your opinions, but I just think different, I see it the other way around.

That example, of a tenth of a second, is a very decent gain for a simple muffler, better yet, it's realistic. A very, very long time ago, I was at the strip with my father, and I asked why these guys were emptying their cars of random belongings, draining washer fluid, unbolting seats, even going as far as taking out cigarette lighters.

"Well, if you save an ounce in 1,600 spots, that's 100 pounds less."

EVERYTHING adds up, that tenth may not seem like much, but, add some heads that'll gain you 2-3 tenths, some lightweight wheels that'll gain you 2-3 tenths, that 1 tenth from the higher flowing muffler, 1-2 tenths from an aftermarket intake manifold and decently flowing filter, then see who's happier on race day.

Heck, if you look up the horsepower gains of certain products, then whip out the 1/4 mile calculator, them E.T. improvements are possible from bolt on mods on a decent engine.

I'm not trying to argue over a simple muffler though, I couldn't care less if he buys a muffler that flows less than say Magnaflow or Dynomax, it's just all my personal opinions, combined in with some facts.

I see where you are coming from for sure. I personally just think it's silly to not pick a muffler you really like, to save .1 (again, if that), on a 14-15 second car. I like flowmasters, but when you start making good power, I would agree to switch to a better flowing muffler, or another flowmaster that's not the 80 series.

I was told by Flowmaster that this p/n 17228 was for the "High Output" 305 and would not work on the "LO3".

Can anyone confirm? I am also looking at the Flowmaster for my 88' Camaro, but haven't ordered it because of too many questions. I was also told by them that the stock pipe is 2 1/4" and the 2 1/2" Flowmaster p/n 17224 was the correct one for my car.

Thanks for any help

I have flowmaster on my stock 305, everyone said it was really loud but to be honest it wasn't as loud as I had thought. Then again im used to being around cars and trucks with cherry bombs.

Speaking of Cherry Bombs, has anyone ever seen a flow chart from them? I was told they actually do not flow good, I was surprised.

funny thing, i seen on youtube stacy davids new show, and he went to the place where the cherry bomb mufflers are made, and they did some kind of test with their Vortex (i think) muffler and one that looked an aweful lot like a flowmaster and the cherry bomb did much better.

I put a Flowmaster American Thunder cat back with Magnaflow high flow cat on my car and I love it. Sounds great on my car. Get compliments all the time. Did not like the long tips so cut them back about 3in. and they tuck in real nice.

THAT WAS A FLOWCRAPSTER MUFFLER!!! You can SOOOO tell....all ****-ly made and prone to rust and fall off and sound even worse than it already does.

Yeah, abouuuut thaaaat...I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of disagree with you there. I've had my American Thunder (50-series) catback on my car for 8 (that is eight) years now...no rust, no problems of any sort.

I also happen to think that it sounds much better than most other systems too. It's not obnoxiously loud, like the Borlas, it has that deep throaty *what I would consider* musclecar sound to it. Granted I've got 80 cubes and some cam over a 305, but even back in her stock 350 TPI days I loved it.

Sure I could just skip the muffler and dump straight out, possibly gaining some time at the track, but I drive my car on the road 90% of the time and would rather it sound how I like it to sound. If ETs are THAT important then just put a cutout in and pop the plate when you go to the track!
