Ok. Its time to put my headers on, and im trying to find a true dual exhaust system, but nobody makes one.... from what ive been told its "impossible". I find this hard to believe seeing as any exhaust shop can mandrel bend a piece of exhaust tube in any direction they want, and should be able to form it to fit any car. Has anyone tried this successfully? I just dont want to choke up my engine with a y-pipe if i dont have to. Thanks in advance for the input.

True duals are very doable. Depending on how big of a pipe you want to use will determine the routing. If you want to use 3" pipes you'll have to run them down the tranny tunnel and over the rear axle and out. If you'll be happy with 2.25-2.5" you can run them back the stock routing. Summit racing even sells a kit now. It's from Dynomax and is 2.25" but its not mandrel-bent. Follows the stock routing though. Search around on the exhaust forum, there is a thread dedicated to pics of true dual setups on member's cars.

 

Sorry, i meant to put more info up, ive searched the exhaust section for "true duals" and got a few ideas, one of them mentioned true duals getting in the way of suspension upgrades and such. The reason im doing this now is im putting my headman headers on hopefully within a week and would like better flow(and louder exhaust will be a nice by-product) I understand the exhaust tends to run into clearance problems and such, so ive decided to maybe go with a 1 into 2 cat, but im not totally sure. Id like the best flow possible. Is it possible to run duals, but run the drivers side pipe through the original point, under the oil pan, and just have both pipes (im thinking 2.5") share the little exhaust tunnel? Maybe by running some hi-flow cats, into low profile bullet-style mufflers? Any and all input would be great, and thanks for the tip about the summit kit.

 

2.5" is the max you could fit in the stock location. It'll be tight, but should work. You wouldn't be able to run subframe connectors though, unless you custom-made your own. Possibly not even then. It would be best to find a cat with dual in/out. Bullet style mufflers should work just fine.

 

Im a bit biased, but I dont see the point in running true duals when you already compromised by using shorty headers. And that's basically the best way to do what you're describing. Some good shorties will be cheaper and easier to route that way than a custom fabbed piece. The shorties are just plug and play really.

But if you get long tubes, it dumps on the other side of the trans. There is no way to bring it over. But I see shorties as a performance compromise over long tubes, so I dont see the point in dealing with the problems with true duals when you dont have LT's.

 

#1....You apparently didn't search very much. Duals have been talked about, and pics posted, every single month for years & years, here on TGO.

#2....There is a bolt-on, commercially made dual kit sold by Summit (i think) for true duals. I've posted it her on TGO before, so I know the info is here. Not saying that I LIKE it, but it does exist.

 

I did search very much. and nobody really focused on the topic of running a true dual system. they focused on saying it wasnt worth it, or that it was unnecessary. The 305 in my camaro is only there for a short while before i finish my 383. My 383 is going to be around 650hp with nitrous. so i want true duals for better flow. And the summit kit is a lovely idea, for a 305. But if i want this system to be compatible with my 383 im not about to choke it up with 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipes. If you wouldnt mind pointing me in the direction of one of the monthly posts about true duals that focuses on this topic id greatly appreciate it, as i cant find any. I understand that this topic may get a bit beat to death, but im just trying to ask for some advice and input. Im pretty new to this game, so please bear with my stupid questions.

 

Legal or not? True dual, in that the pipes run on both sides? Ain't gonna happen. Federal Emissions Tampering laws will prevent that.

Other than that, the Summit kit or a custom built one. Those are your only 2 choices.

 

Go to the top of this forum and click on the true duals thread. Go to the bottom of page 3 and look for my screen name. I have true 3" duals that will flow plenty for your power level. Copy my setup and you'll be fine.
