catalytic converter question

I have to put a catalytic converter on my Iroc to pass emissions because mine is hollowed out from the previous owner. Unforchanetly I hear that the coverter will make the car quieter, is this true and if so by how much. I have a flowmaster on now and I love the sound I don't want to change a thing so i'm just trying to get a grip on what to expect. Thanks
