383 exhaust setup
383 exhaust setup
Hi! I need some help picking out a new exhaust system for my 383.. 8.5:1 comp. Its got a procharger, Edelbrock etec200 heads. at the moment i got some useless headers, they dont cover the hole exhaust port! my Y-pipe is going into a 3" pipe all the way to the back, one mufler only, then into the tailpipe, that i would like to keep. I want to go with long tube headers and and a dual exhaust, magnaflow muflers. What headers so go with? and will there be enough clarance to go over the rearend at the driver side? will add pictures later

If the car isnt all that lowered you probably can sneak a pipe down the drivers side of the transmission tunnel and the up over the axle. There is room just becareful with fuel lines off the gas tank and the brake line to the rear end.
I am assuming you have the stock fuel lines running down the drivers side body. Keeping the exhaust there will heat up those lines and if you are using the factory rubber lines from the tank to the body hardlines, you could melt that if the exhaust gets hot enough. My exhaust has melted my plastic gas tank.
If you are using some other fuel system with different line routing, there is no need to worry. Just route the lines away from the exhaust.
For best ground clearance you can do a dual system with some good 1 3/4" shorty headers like Dyno Don's. If long tubes are a must, then just run a simple dual system down the driveshaft tunnel. 2.5" should be enough depending on how much power you are making. 600-650hp or less is fine with dual 2.5 on a blower with a good muffler.
I have shorty headers (turbo manifolds) on my car and run dual 3" down the stock location and up over the axle. there is plenty of room, so a 2.5" pipe should be easy to route.

Re: 383 exhaust setup
I have dyno don's headers and y-pipe into a 3 inch catback system, along with a 3.5 inch cutout for going to the strip. His headers are shorties and made 400rwhp in my combo and some 410 rwtq. I think shorties are so much less a pain in the *** than long tubes, and not much is lost between the 2.
