Returning the 82 back to the quiet ride

Hi all,
And happy Sunday.
My 82 Firebird has the SLP Catback System that uses a Resenator instead of a muffler. When the car is in the garage idling, it can shake the whole house. Its time to quiet the old Bird back down.

I am looking to replace the Resenator with a good muffler. The Magnaflow model 12588 looks like a good good fit, but its slighty larger then the Resenator. The dimensions of the Resenator are 18 X 9 X 5. The Resenator has 3 inch inlet on one side with 2 2.5 inch outlets on the other. The model 12588 muffler can be found at the following link;

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/universalmuffler.asp

My hope is the the Magnaflow muffler will get rid of the rumble but allow the exhust system to flow good. The current exhuast system is all SLP with a Magnaflow 3inch in/out Cat.

If anyone knows of a better fitting muffler please post it.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Returning the 82 back to the quiet ride

Hi All,
I have found some solutions to muffler applicaton.
1) Magnaflow 12588: a little on the long side, but I believe I can cut some length off of my idimediate and exhust pipes and make it fit
2) Borla 400241: is a better fit and would not required me to trim any length off of the pipes.
3) Flowmaster 8430152 or 8430502: The 8430502 is a 50 series Delta Flow three chamber muffler and is a good fit "no cutting of pipes required".

#2 is the most expensive. #s 1 & 3 are of simalar cost. If it was your ride which muffler would you choose?

The Flowmaster muffler flows the worst out of those 3. From the cars i've heard with the flowmaster muffler, it tends to have a really raspy sound. The magnaflow muffler gives a really nice sound and a nice rumble at idle. The borla would be good but i don't think it offers anything more than the magnaflow muffler, so you're paying extra for nothing. My vote goes for the magnaflow!

Hi Camaro82Z28,
If I want a nice rumble, then I would keep what I have. I really need to reduce the rumble as much as possible. I have listened too many sound clips on line and you are right the Magnaflow having a rumble to it. The Flowmaster did not have hardley any rumble, but tend to have a nice tone to WOT and too me sounded vary smooth from the midrange to WOT.

I have order the Flowmaster and if I not happy with it, I will send it back.

Re: Returning the 82 back to the quiet ride

I have the Magnaflow cat back exhaust and man I LOVE it. I researched for months trying to find the right exhaust and the Magnaflow did it for me. It has a great low tone at idle without loosing the muscle car sound and when you get on it man that thing opens up. I think Magnaflow would be the best bet...
