Subscribed for future reference when I install my magnaflow system.

I love the sound of magnaflow over flowmaster.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

I just got the Walker tailpipes that I'm going to put on so I thought I would post pics of them and some additional info. The tailpipes are P/N WLK43243 and WLK43244 which I bought from Summit.

I like how these tailpipes do not extend past the rear bumper and they turn down at the end. The only thing I should mention is that I'm going to have to take these tailpipes to a muffler shop and have them opened up where they connect to the muffler. They probably have to be opened up another 1/4" so they will slip on.

As for the Magnaflow tailpipes, to each their own, but I did not like the look of them. To me, the Magnaflow tailpipes looked like they belong on a fast and furious import car.

Great Thread MI ROC-Z. I'm fixing to go with the set setup TheMuskr has. It'll get my 'dog' going. From what I've read the Hooker 2055s are a great fit for our cars. It would be nice if they had 3" stock type tailpipes.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Thanks azdzrtfox, I'm also very interested in the Hooker 2055's but I'm probably just going to stick with the stock exhaust manifolds for now. I like your idea about having 3" stock type tailpipes, I would use those instead of the Walker tailpipes.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

I just finished installing the Magnaflow 16829, and was less than
impressed with the fitment of the over-axle pipe. How did that
part work for you? And I would really appreciate some pics, that
might illustrate where I went off the rails.

And congrats to you & wifey on the latest addition.

i dont have any audio, but the build quality is great. read around and you will see that they are one of the best shorties you can buy. install was long but not too bad ( especially if you dont have ac) did have to take out an engine mount bolt and rock the engine a bit but it all was worth it

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

I'm sorry to hear about the fitment issues you had with your install I_dis_travlr, to be honest I couldn't have asked for a better fit for the entire system. As far as how the over axle pipe install went for me, I just kept everything loose and tightened the clamps little by little from the muffler up to the y-pipe.

I'm attaching some pics that I took of the over axle pipe mount and the driver side mount setup that I'm using. The L shaped brackets and new rubber isolator mount on the driver side I bought from NAPA. They are Walker exhaust parts but I can't remember the part numbers for them.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

1st pic is of the Magnaflow tailpipe connection to the muffler.

2nd pic is of the Walker tailpipe before I had it expanded.

3rd pis is of the Walker tailpipe expanded and with the slots I cut into it to resemble the Magnaflow pipe. ( I believe these slots are cut into the pipe to aid with clamping power)

The fitment of these Walker pieces onto the Magnaflow muffler are by no means perfect, but they are not horrible either. I'm going to address the fitment and other issues in my next post.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Here are the preliminary mock up photos I took of the Walker tailpipes mounted to the Magnaflow muffler.

1st pic is of the driver side tailpipe. The mount on the tailpipe is going to have to either be moved, or removed, and a new mount welded on in order for the tailpipe to bolt up correctly. I'm still trying to figure out how to do this and what type of mount to use, so if there are any suggestions please do not hesitate to share them with me!

2nd pic is of both tailpipes mounted and how they will sit in relation to the rear bumper/ground clearance. I like how they are not very visible while looking at the car.

3rd pic is of the passenger side tailpipe mounted onto the muffler.

Overall the fit of these parts is not too bad but in my opinion the little extra work/fuss to get them on there is well worth it.

Please don't laugh too hard at the muffler support that is in the pics, LOL.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Great thread. My son and I bought an 88 Sport Coupe last year for his first car. Its only a V6 car, but it doesn't have a speck of rust, 1 small door ding and we only paid $800 for it. the exhaust is about shot so this is a nice guide for us. I don't think we will spend the big bucks on it, but want to do a single in, dual out muffler and new pipes and cat.

Thank you copyfixr, I hope you and your son get to spend many hours working together on his new car... before you know it you'll be getting talked into swapping out that V6 for an LS motor and 6 speed, lol.

I don't think the only swap he wants to do is trade me for my 76 Trans Am. The 455 4spd has a little more torque than the 2.8 lol! I'm pretty sure that's not happening any time soon!

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Hey perfect timing for me to do my exhaust lol. I just ordered the same catback as yours for $365 on ebay. Although I'm guessing you're using the magnaflow 16450 y-pipe? I want to get that for my 91 although Jegs is saying it's for 86-89 f-bodies. Anybody know why this might not work on a 1991 trans am?

Congrats on the purchase of the Magnaflow cat-back... you won't be disappointed. Keep us updated on how your install goes!

To answer your question about the y-pipe, yes I installed the 16450. As for why Jegs shows the application for 86-89 only, I'm guessing it's because of the double cat setup on certain IROC's and Trans Am's that I think started in 1990. It is my understanding that even if someone has the stock double cat setup it could be switched over to the 16450 with just the single 3" high flow cat. I wouldn't doubt the 16450 outflows the dual cat setup and I can't imagine there would be any fitment issues.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Alright, I just started reading these posts on March 4, 2011. And here I am posting, I have on my car pretty much the same Magnaflow cat back system on my 87 305 4bbl carb Camaro. Gotta say I love the thing, but I just failed emissons after spending about 140 bucks on preparation with a new smog pump, spark plugs, etc. I just put in some G2P cleaner in the fuel tank today so that should make me pass easily but I need a new carb from a stock one anyways so might as well get it befor the free re-test, I'm going with a Magnaflow cat no doubt, but I was wondering how much louder and performance do you get from one?

Hi, and welcome to thirdgen.org! That sucks your car failed the emissions test, but good luck on your re-test.

As for your question about the Magnaflow catalytic converter... in my case my car was without a cat when I bought it, so now that the cat is installed I think it's quieter, and I like it. As for performance there's probably a slight/minimal gain over stock unless you put headers and a high flow y-pipe on too!

Do you have the stock catalytic converter still on your car? If so you might want to switch out to the new cat before you go re-test!

Thanks man! Yeah I thought it might have something to do with the dual-cats some cars have but my 91 has the single cat setup. I called Magnaflow and they told me that the reason the website lists it as 86-89 is because those are the only years they tested their y-pipe on. I was told it might work on mine but it's not their responsibility if it doesn't.

The great part is that I got my cat-back literally 24 hours after I bought it... I guess fedex had a convoy heading out to my area right when I ordered it or something lol. Hopefully I'll install it within a week or so, since I gotta drop the tank to replace the fuel pump anyway. But so far I'm happy; it looks like a very high quality setup.

I'm just a little hesitant about the tailpipes that are included... we'll see how they flow visually with the rest of my car. I want to make a tailpipe setup to resemble the late 70's Bandit Trans Ams like this:

I once saw a picture of a 91/92 Trans Am somewhere with this tailpipe style and I loved it... I just can't find the picture anymore.

That's awesome you got the exhaust that quick. I'm no expert by any means but I would guess that their y-pipe would fit on your 91. I don't think there are any major engine/frame differences between the years.

I completely understand what your saying about the tailpipes, I couldn't stand the sight of them sticking out behind the bumper. I ended up selling the Magnaflow tailpipes on Ebay just a couple of days ago, so swapping out to the Walker tailpipes was completely paid for.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Ya I still have the stock cat and its partially busted for sure. I am planning on getting the Magnaflow cat, I figure I'll go to Checkers tomorrow and buy it and maybe install it tomorrow too, it'll give me something to do. But back to the exhaust its just nice to know I wasn't the only one with problems when I was installing my system and was standing there at some points dumbfounded. Luckily I had my schools lift in high school so everything was right above my head.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust system install

Hey everyone, it's been awhile and I finally have the exhaust buttoned up and video of it running too!

In one of my previous posts I mentioned there was an exhaust leak coming from the driver side exhaust manifold to y-pipe connection. It was being caused by the y-pipe not being fully seated up to the ball end of the exhaust manifold.

Well, I tried to draw the y-pipe closer up to the manifold by tightening the bolts and I noticed that the nut closest to the firewall wasn't budging. When I tried to take the nut off the whole stud snapped off at the manifold.

To make a long story short, I used a center punch, marked the center, drilled out the center of the bolt using progressively larger drill bits, then used a 1.25" damaged bolt removal bit, and a little heat via map gas, and the broken stud was out. Then I used a tap to clean out the threads and threaded in the new replacement studs I bought from NAPA.

If anyone is wondering the p/n from NAPA is 600-1809(direct replacement).

Also a little tip for anyone putting on the Magnaflow y-pipe... make sure the driver side is fully seated and fairly tight before wrenching down the passenger side connection.

Anyways, here are the links to the videos I took today of the IROC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDuUuzbGWyA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgkB5c7F28k

BTW I love the entire Magnaflow setup, little to no interior drone, nice low idle, and when you get on it the exhaust really screams...perfect!

Nice! I knew you'd love it. I love my Magnaflow setup for all the same reasons, and that system has great bang-for-your-buck. I commented on the 2nd video btw.
Here's a video of mine revving with an 87 which has a knock-off Flowmaster I believe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZJewAUyGzs
and an in-car WOT pull:

As for the tailpipes... I dunno... they're really starting to grow on me!

I'm Hoping they will bolt up to Dyno Dons headers. Those are the ones I'm saving up for. The magnaflow kit comes with a splice between each cat and the down pipe so you can adjust where exactly it meets the collector. The magnaflow kit worked really well on stock headers.

does anyone have any ideas on how to do a weld free setup? I want everything to be bolt together so that I can save time, and hopefully money. Oh and silly question, but everywhere I look t only classifies the kits as 5.0L ones, but since the 5.0 and 5.7 are pretty much the same they should fit either or right... (please dont hate on me... m old firebird was a v6... this is my first v8)
