Y-pipe questions. And Header ID. Please help.
Before I start, yes I went thru the stickies and didnt find what I need so I am going to try here.
Hey all. I am getting a set of shorty headers from a seller here. They look like hooker but he thinks they may be hedman. I know hedman use the ball type collector, but have they always done that with shorties? And the main thing I need to know is, can I use the factory y pipe on these provided I have the shop bend and weld them up? I just cant afford a new y-pipe and to have one made for me is not much cheaper. Not to mention I dont even know what brand they are. And if I have no other out but to buy a y-pipe does it matter who I get it from, as long as I get the right colletor size I wouldnt think there would be a problem. I am tring to do this with less than no money (in a matter of speaking). Not all of us here can afford all the top of the line new parts, and for a set of headers for 90.00 shipped to me is a damn good deal. So can I get some pointers? I am not a newbe with this and this is my 3rd,3rd gen, but it is the first one I am putting headers on. i have the AC box pulled out so room is not an issue, and another seller here is selling me an AC delete box for 85.00. so I am just tring to cover my **** you know what I mean?

Re: Y-pipe questions.
Regular 3-bolt flanges used to be more common on collectors, but lately it seems like the manufacturers have been putting ball joints on the same old designs.
Y pipes aren't universal, it needs to match the headers you have. A stock Y pipe isn't likely to match anything.

Look for a Hooker emblem.
I don't see an O2 sensor bung. If you need one, make sure that
there's one in place. It's not uncommon for the "bargain" used stuff,
to nickel&dime you to the point, that its as cheap to buy exactly
what you need -- new. Especially if you factor in your time solving
all the secondary issues.
I got used Hookers, then a bargain y-pipe (Doug's) from Summit.
Guess what?
They don't line up properly, so the solution will involve
considerable cutting/grinding/re-welding on my part. So if the more
expensive Hooker y-pipe would fit as advertised, my time would
DEfINITELY have been cost effective.
Good luck.

I just have to do this on the cheap. I am putting my money into a engine build not exhaust at this time, so cheap is the word of the month for me right now. and 90.00 shipped is a good price for me.

It turned out that they were hedman headers #68470. I just got them today and started the clean up. A lot of surface rust not worth it to have them blasted clean I dont think. They clean up well with just good ol sandpaper. I am thinking of doing a home electrolsis clean up with them.

Yeah thats is. but no,thats not how I am going to do it. All it takes is a little arm and hammer washing soda , water, a steel rod and electricity (battery charger).

A search on youtube for what I was talking about and you can see that it works wonders, It can be done at home and it doesnt cost a lot (maybe 5.00) when you compair it to sandblasting (around 50.00) . And a can of VHT flame proof high temp paint is under 10.00 so all in all I will have under 120.00 in these. Thats a good deal to me.
