Flames out of the tail pipe

I hope this is an alright place to ask this, but in the fast and furious movies they have flames coming out of the tail pipes. I am curious as to how this works? Can someone describe how the setup would be on a thirdgen?

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

Movie magic.

...the only 'good' way to do that in reality, if all you want is just the visual, is to get a flamethrower kit, and those only work on carbureted engines with manual chokes. I wouldn't recommend it on a car with plastic bumpers though.

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

basically what those things do is cut the spark, and send raw fuel through the exhaust where another spark plug ignites the raw fuel.

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

you can also get kits that use propane piped into the tailpipe and an ignitor (usually spark plug hooked up to a switched electrical source), but its a lot of work to look ok and not melt anything

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

I had a flamethrower kit on my car but it wouldnt work with my TPI setup and flowmaster 80 series. My timing jumped one day and I started shooting flames out of the exhaust if i was really on it and would let out. It was pretty badass lookn at night! lol but I switched to carb now and may put the kit back on but i doubt it, its just not worth it and u really dont get the look u want. IMO

His only happens off throttle, stock computer, relatively stock motor, guy can't figure out why it does it. Definetly NOT a performance advantage or desirable.

in the f&f they also use naws to blow intake welds, the cars have 25 gears and all other kinds of stupidity. \
Time to watch some mechanical videos (like the free ones on youtube) to cure that Hollywood movie poisoning

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

I think I can fix all these problems im about to do the same thing with my car I have a 84 and what im gonna do use camping propane tanks there small and cheap i already have one and i have installed a safety switch in my dome lamp and an ignition push button in my ashtray slot(lid still closes) and a sprinkler solenoid for the fuel cut off i got 2 cheap car spark plugs im gonna install in each exhuast pipe about 4-5 inches from the tip and fuel line about 2-3 inches behind using metal propane hose to prevent heat problems as for ignition you can pick up coils for like 9 bux and find a wiring diagram on youtube for the electrical set up ill take pics of my progress I have already got the toggle safety and ignition button in place

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

most the cars I've seen with them were 50's hot rods and they have a big flame retardent blanket they put on the trunk lid to protect the paint . The nascar guys have a flame off throttle because of all the raw fuel hitting the almost 1000 degree pipes , it goes out when they get back on the gas .

I've heard you can rig the spark device out of a barbecue lighter to the end of your tailpipe and get something of a fireball. As mentioned above, you essentially need an engine that's running rich.

If you just want some cheap fun, you might try running like an IV tube from a syringe to about 10 inches from the tailpipe and fill it with gas. Use some brake line near the hot exhaust pipe. Push the plunger and your exhaust will aerate the raw gasoline. might work. I've thought about doing this for giggles.

In the movie, if memory serves, the flames were caused by nitrous oxide which is silly.

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

My old firebird did it as well but stopped after the timing was adjust maybe one of the previous owners thought it would be cool or something, lol. it only happened if you revved it right and basically crackle or pop, maybe something like a back fire, kinda hard to explain anyways it was kinda fun to mess with people with it one time i really freaked out a soccer mom in her minivan when she was tailgateing me. also it usually blew out a foot or two

Re: Flames out of the tail pipe

if seriously want it to do it despite killing your bumper and anything else pretty much run just straight pipe no cat or nothing all the way back and for some reason they seem to work better 1 or 2 of those stupid cannon mufflers all the imports seem to have make it run rich with slightly off timing and have at it will mainly do it on wot and let off after but i dont suggest it ran an old S10 that way that had a 2.8 mpfi from an 88 rs in it. it looked i guess could say cool foot long flame and random fireballs and lit the whole rear end up at night but the cost?? burnt valves multiple tickets and fines and constant plug cleaning/replacing before the motor said screw it and went out the door its not worth the damage if you really care for your car let the movie crap stay right there in the movies 3rd gens are not made to shoot flames like that only old hotrods
