Single cat header modified for dual cat bird?

Just bought the hooker 2055 headers with single cat y pipe. My car has dual cats...

I'll be taking it to an exhaust shop to have them build me from the y-pipe back but the shop has told me i only need 1 cat underneath, but i KNOW that because from the factory i have dual cats, i need to KEEP dual cats to pass emissions. is this correct?

What i'd like him to do is just chop down the Y pipe and feed it through the existing dual cats (which will be gutted and straight tube through welded).

Do you guys have a recommendation aside from my above idea to make this work?

you have 8 exhaust ports trying to flow through the 1 cat at the same time 2 cats would flow better than 1. the n10 dual cat option on our cars added hp more hp goooood

Yeah i am just wondering if the headers have 3" collectors that convert into 1 Y (see attached image) do you think it's better to cut the pipes and weld replacement pipes directly to each cat or have it collect into one tube that then Y's out back into dual cats that Ys back into single 3" exhaust?

If your cats are going to be gutted anyway, what's the point? Technically you're probably violating the letter of the law by going to a single cat, but then you are anyway since you're running gutted cats. You might just as well just buy a high flow cat. It'll probably still pass.

Actually its not about violating emissions, its about passing emissions and it is Purely a visual check in the county i live in. i am more worried about airflow and hp gain than reducing my emissions.

Then have them put each pipe off the header running to its own cat
