Ive got a 91 z28 305 tpi with a dynomax catback exhaust, stock cat, aftermarket y pipe with mandrel bends, and stock exhaust manifold w/ egr delete. I was wondering if anyone knows of a set of headers i could buy which has an o2 sensor bung that would bolt on directly to my car and existing y pipe replacing the stock manifolds without any mods. I dont want to buy a new y pipe just to fit the headers as the y pipe was recently replaced and i would rather not do any headpipe fabrication to fit headers as it would probably would be easier and cheaper to just replace the y pipe. Anyone know of any such headers??

Go to Summitracing.com Enter your car in the search parameters and search under exhaust. It will tell you what will fit your car. You will need to know the current diameter of your pipes to know which ones will work for you.

I think the Edelbrocks are designed that way, which just reinforces my opinion of their products.

No the edelbrocks are not designed for the stock y pipe. They come with their own crappy y pipe.

 

i was in this situation. i had a fully stock exhaust and decided i wanted headers. so i looked into ones that would hook up to stock, the more i looked the more i decided on just getting the Hooker 2055's then when i installed those i had to cut the old cat off so i bought a magnaflow cat. then when that was all in i just had to finish it off with a magnaflow cat back. once you get the ball rolling its hard to get it to stop

 

I have personally seen how crappy the factory dual cat system is, and how much worse the single cat is. I wouldn't waste your money buying headers if your not going to do the Y-Pipe and cats. Your just going to end up kicking yourself down the road.

 

the y pipe isn't stock...its dynomax performance but built to hook up to the stock cat and stock manifolds...i was just wondering if there were headers that would be at the same angle/bolt directly onto the y-pipe without any welding...

 

The stock manifolds are the only thing that bolt to the stock y pipe perfectly. There will always be fabrication and welding of the ypipe involved unless you buy headers with matching ypipe. If your ypipe is a dynomax, don't they make dynomax headers too? Chances are if that ypipe bolts to your factory manifolds, then it is made for factory manifolds only. Check your ypipe part number and find out which dynomax headers they will bolt up to. The easiest way IMO is to buy headers and the ypipe for them at the same time,but if you cant find any headers that bolt up to that dynomax ypipe then a muffler shop should be able to make you the ball/socket connector though and weld a small piece of pipe up to each one of those ball/socket connectors and then you will have to get that welded up the ypipe you are running. Understand? So, basically i am saying that the ypipe you have now will probably have to be cut and modified to fit your future headers. Cost me a little over a hundred bux. Not too bad.

 

one reason our cars respond so well to exhaust mods, is because replacing that awefull Y pipe and its crush bent 2 1/4" pipe, inwhich the passenger side doesnt really merge, but is butted into another 2 1/4" pipe. getting rid of that with 2 1/2" pipe mandrel bent, flowing into a proper merged larger 3" pipe does wonders for flow.

you can have any headers to you want.. but putting them to the stock Y pipe or the Y pipe Offroad that these company make will restrict the engine..

 

Easiest thing to do would be to buy headers and a matching ypipe designed to fit those headers. If you are stuck on keeping the ypipe you have, you will have to cut both the new ypipe that fits the headers and your existing ypipe and have the two of them welded to each other. Unless, like i was saying earlier, you can get the muffler shop to make you a collector with a flange and a small piece of pipe (apprx. 4 inches) that is welded to it, then, you will still have to get that welded up to your existing ypipe.

 

You don't want leaks anywhere in the exhaust system on these cars. You will lose power, particularly low end torque.
