Adapter woes
I recently picked up a Magnaflow exhaust off of Craigslist. The piece I got is the muffler and the tips. When I bought it the guy had cut the tips off becasue he planned to sell it seperately.
First question: What size adapter would be needed to connect the stock y-pipe to the "touch over" 3" Magnaflow muffler?
Second question: It looks as though they had actually pulled the tips from the ends of the branches from the muffler, because when you look at the tips there is a 2" end that sticks off the tip that is smaller than the rest of the tip. So, would you a) try to shove the tips back in by heating them and then welding together or b) find adapters for the connection?
I will get pics up soon so you can better understand this gibberish!
Now...where is that camera?

Re: Adapter woes
Depends....what size is your I pipe?
Take the muffler to your favorite parts store and find an adapter what will slip over it. If it doesn't slide over your I pipe, you can always exchange it.

Re: Adapter woes
Like I said on my muffler the part the pipe attatches to is 3" across. I figure that maybe I should get one with a 3 1/4" end then?

Re: Adapter woes
IIRC, your stock pipe could range from 2.25 to 2.75", depending on the year and engine code. You need to measure the outer and/or inner diameter with a caliper, and match it up to the adapter that way.
Unless you are the only owner, I'd never assume anything was 'stock' on one of our cars- especially exhaust.

Re: Adapter woes
you may have an issue with getting an adapter at your local part stores; most don't stock much (if anything) over 2 1/2", so you may have better luck taking the muffler (and the car) to a local exhaust shop. they'll be able to make something up quickly and make sure its done right the first time. It something pretty simple for them to do, so it wont be too bad on the wallet...

Re: Adapter woes
I think the exhaust system parts connect like this.
From the motor:
Headers, Y or X or H-Pipes, Cat, Intermediate pipes, over the axle pipes, mufflers and tips.
If you have the old system off measure the pipe and get correct adapter/connector and use clamps unless your talking about the longer parts that support the hanger/muffler on each side. Clamps would hold for a bit but plan on chatting with someone with a welder to weld things up. So you can then take the clamps off, if you want.
Or do like previous post mentioned and go there first.
If its a 3" muffler you might as well see about getting a complete 3" system at least to the Cat like a CAT-BACK system, minus muffler.
Then find a header/Y-pipe combo(its the easiest way) with a 2.5" Y that exits into 3" Cat would finish it off.
If you can afford it get mandrel bent it is best.
