Understanding Spacers

I have a 1987 trans am 350 and while doing a head job i disconnected the y pipe from the stock manifolds. At first i didnt notice anything falling but when i looked under the car after a while i found a round thick spacer, atleast i think that's what they are called. It looked like it went inbetween the y pipe and the manifold. but there was only one, was there a specific side that only used a spacer or did i need it for both sides? i tried to bolt up the y pipe back without it and there's an exhaust leak that can be heard.
