Hedman Header 68470 Help!

I am installing the Hedman headers, and in the "Sticky" it says that these headers should fit my car. It's the stock 350 block with AFR 195cc heads on it if that helps.

My header on the passenger side is perfect. The drivers side hits the subframe, near the oil pan. It's the ring with the three holes in it to connect it to the Y pipe that hits.

I know these should fit, but why aren't they? The only thing I can think of is the motor mounts may be old, but would that really free up like an inch of room that I need?

I have all the header bolts in, but this ring around the collector is just right against the subframe.

Anything will help, thanks!

My 68470's fit great. I'm guessing that your motor mounts are bad or the AFR heads are that much different. Also I think your talking about the crossmember not the subframe that the header is hitting, Right? I just looked under mine and there is about a 1/4 between the header and crossmember so there is not much room for error.

Mark.

Sorry, yes, I meat the cross member.

Would a motor mount shrink that bad that it would close the gap like that?

It just took me a few hours to get that stupid engine in - I don't want to tear it out again.

Rubber loses its elasticity. Think of rubber motor mounts like a worn out spring.
You can see the deformity in this pic

Just thinking of taking the engine out again makes me shiver.

I'll try the motor mounts first I guess. The angle of the heads would be the only other thing, but I think AFR would make a standard angle for the side of the heads that accommodate everything.

Re: Hedman Header 68470 Help!

it's not the motor mounts, i had the same problem with my coated ones, i called them up and they told me it was my world product heads, anyhow i took a grinder and notched the collector ring out, of course this voids the warranty.

and i have new poly motor mounts..

Re: Hedman Header 68470 Help!

Well, the new motor mounts are $24, so I will try those first, just in case.

I was actually laying underneath the car last night with a file just seeing if I could file off some of the header without taking it out of the car. I didn't want to disconnect the steering assembly again to get the header out.

I will try the mounts as they are over 20 years old, and then if that fails I'll grind down the collector ring, which was my first thought any way.

Funny thing while I'm mentioning having no room - when I put the engine back in the car it sat an inch or so lower than the transmission. I thought it was weird but got it lined up after a while. It makes sense that the mounts are old and have shrunk - so this may help the alignment of that as well.

Re: Hedman Header 68470 Help!

I replaced the motor mounts today (that sucked!) with brand spankin new ones and it didn't make any difference.

Guess I got to start grinding away at the collector ring.

Re: Hedman Header 68470 Help!

my question is, why are you running shorty headers on an engine that has afr 195's on it? seems you should be looking at a set of hooker longtubes or the like....

Re: Hedman Header 68470 Help!

I figured anything would breathe better than the stock crap, and didn't know if I'd have enough room for longtubes.

The list of what fits seems to be all shorty headers. IS there a set of longtubes that fits the car without any mods? And is there a y-pipe to go with that?
