Full engine vs top end rebuild

Not sure if this is the right section for this, but I'm planning on rebuilding the 305 in my 86' this summer. I'm currently planning on only doing the top end with new heads, a new intake manifold and new camshaft. Would it be worth it to do the whole engine as apposed to just the top end?

you would be better off sinking your money into a 350. If your doing low buck hop ups depending on how much cylinder wear you have just break the glaze and throw in a set of rings bearings and a new oil pump.

Re: Full engine vs top end rebuild

I've thought about it but its a pretty low budget rebuild and my money will go a lot farther in the 305 that buying a whole new 350 as they're not as easy to come by where I live as they are in the rest of the country. For example a set of vortex heads for a 350 used are around $400 but the ones I got for my 305 where $80, not as good, but much cheaper. The rest of the parts are similar in price so for a 350 build I'd be spending about $500 more for an extra 50hp. I'm also trying to maintain my gas mileage so I'm not throwing anything extreme at it.
