Re: Cat converter '82 IROC

First it is not a iroc, iroc was 85-92. You just bought a 82 z28 more than likely. Second im pretty sure it came stock with a cat and also with a smog system

Welcome to TGO, magikstik.

Yes, the car was equipped with an OE cat.

The IROC was around from 85 to 90.

Re: Cat converter '82 IROC

in the U.S. at least,'82 did have catalytic converter-on
'82s,carb ones at least, it was the old style"pellet bed"
type-'83s were updated to a honeycomb style,the
reason '83 had slightly higher HP rating than '82.

Re: Cat converter '82 IROC

If you want or have to run a cat a new high flow cat would be leaps and bounds better than the stock pellet style. High flow cats are cheap.

Re: Cat converter '82 IROC

I just changed the original catalytic converter on my Firebird and replaced it with an aftermarket high flow cat. Much, much cheaper than buying an OEM cat and a much better product. You'll need a chisel for one end. The other end is bolted. Neither end is welded unless some idiot PO decided to be really stupid.

I also used a disposable cutting wheel on my drill since I didn't have an exhaust cutting tool for my cheapo electric impact wrench. If you have a reversible drill, set it so the direction of the spin on the cutting wheel will spin away from your face if it slips. You don't want to change your nickname to "scar face."

If you have the correct power tool or grinder, use it instead. Be careful that you just cut the cat pipe and don't go deep enough to cut into the exhaust pipe. That's why you need a chisel. Make several cuts down the cat pipe. Then chisel if off.

The bolted end should be easy to remove after applying some PB Blaster. Also, the old cat is worth enough money to more than pay for a trip to any metal recycler. When I installed the new cat, I used exhaust putty (any auto parts store) on each end just to be sure nothing leaked. No doubt, someone will jump in and say you don't need it on the bolted end - they are right, but I'm pretty **** about preventing the inhalation of carbon monoxide and it won't hurt to do it.

That's how I did it. There may be some exhaust experts jump in and offer some other better suggestions. I'm the first to admit I'm not a very good mechanic, but found the cat replacement to be a fairly easy job. I just wish I had a car lift and garage rather than using a trolley jack and jack stands on the street in front of my house. On the other hand, these cars are fairly easy to work on in just about anyplace. Owning an older car means doing a lot of the work yourself or having a big pocket full of cash to pay someone else do it.

A new high flow cat is likely to add a little power boost to the engine. What a deal, your car will be smog legal and have more power and it is cheap to do it.
