How much space between tips and bumper?

How close do you guys run your exhaust tips in comparison with your bumper covers? I just redid my exhaust and the 2 4" slash-cut tips are about a half an inch, maybe even a little less, below the bumper cover. The tips themselves stick out a bit past the cover so no exhaust is actually in contact with the bumper BUT will the residual heat surfacing from the tips cause harm to my bumper? The main reason I ask is it's about to be resprayed. (91-92 style)

Re: How much space between tips and bumper?

Mine is pretty close (less than half an inch) and the LM2 on my RS has about the same distance, I've never had any issues and I have fresh paint on the bird.

Thanks for the response man. I figured I wouldn't have any issues but with new paint you can't be too cautious.

The tips never get very hot. I can grab my tips after an hour drive and not burn my hands. Your bumper has an even higher tolerance, so heat will not be an issue with the new paint. Vibration will though

Agreed. Sticking out a bit like these (and mine) doesn't look bad or import-esque at all. Thanks for the other personal accounts guys, much appreciated!

Idk about that. I've worked on thousands of cars and have yet to feel a "cool" exhaust tip. I won't touch them with my bare hands, thats for sure. And I've seen my fair share of melted bumpers cause by exhaust tips touching.

I agree, the only tips I have seen not get too hot to touch are the ones on my RS and this is due to my mid pipe being rotted so not a ton of exhaust come out the tips. I would say keep a half inch between the tips and the bumper cover to be safe. More than a half inch space is going to look funny like the tips are hanging down.

Re: How much space between tips and bumper?

Ive put over 800 miles on my exhaust tips with no negative side effect on my realatively new paint. The top of my exhaust tip is around 1/4" away from the bumper and sticks outabout 1/4 of an inch past the bumper.

Arctic White they dont look anything like imports, if done right. I know it's just your opinion, but almost every car from the factory comes with chrome tips now. Even higher end cars.
