full exhaust question
Hey i have some exhaust question for my 1991 camaro rs convertible with 5.0L im trying to pick the best aftermarket setup that give me great power and sound. I was trying to put a flowmaster 3" exhaust all the back but flowmaster do not seem to make any headers for my year of camaro
. So now the question is do i try to go with different headers and could maybe interfere with the sound and performance or do i try to look for a whole system because i did find some other headers that will fit into the flowmaster cat i pipe and 80 series muffler but there flowtech headers and they have had some bad reviews like they leak the welds are crap and other things
dos magniflow make good headers, cat, and muffler for my car? Oh and one more thing i am currently building a a 355 tpi for my camaro if i buy a exheust setup up for that engine will it bolt up to my current 5.0L engine or no

Re: full exhaust question
ur exhaust will bolt up as long as you dont have any funky heads on there with mods that would change how the headers will fit..
personally i have dyno don headers and borla cat back on my 91 rs..u can search me on youtube--> Klowny1969 ...a video of my car is on there with the exhaust ..it was kinda loud for my camera but hope u get an idea..
magnaflow makes exhaust for our cars..and i do like it..you can also youtube some magnaflow vids to hear how they will sound...
what are your horsepower goals for your car? you should plan your exhaust setup on that..

Re: full exhaust question
Flowmaster does not make headers.
Flowtech are junk.
Hedman, Hooker, and Dyno Dons are good.
Get headers with a matching y pipe.
Take your pick of catback, Flowmaster, Heartthrob, Magnaflow, etc....
Read some of the stickies in this forum as well. Tons of info there.

Re: full exhaust question
the new engine with everything i have done to the motor and want to do with it is going to be producing in the 500's to the wheels and is it better to get every exhaust part from one company or to mix and match

I don't know of a company that builds headers, cats and catbacks for 3rd gens, so yes, feel free to 'mix and match'.

Re: full exhaust question
Dyno Dons are pricey, but well worth it. I've read of 4th gen exhaust systems working with our cars, but I haven't tried it myself.

Re: full exhaust question
It takes a serious smallblock to put 500hp to the wheels.
I'd say you'll need dyno dons 1 3/4" headers or other big tubes, to support that.

Re: full exhaust question
took my 350 4 bolt main and bored it 30 over gave it a howards cam 219/225 duration @.050" 112 lobe seperation 510"/525" lift with 1.5 rockers that's what i have done and got so far now what i still need and want aluminum performance heads with 210cc intake runners 64cc combustion camber,58mm throttle body, throttle body spacer,38lb-40lb injectors, high flow intake whole assembly, and haven't decided on pistons or crank yet.
and as for dual exhaust i would love to but on our cars there is on room for it i don't want to destroy a new exhaust going over speed bumps but thanks for the suggestion

Re: full exhaust question
I'm pretty sure they after market a crossmember for duels and the body can be massaged to put dual exhaust under our 3rd gens. Ill see if I can get some pics, friend of mine just done it at the exhaust shop. The owner had a fabricated crossmember and 2 1/2in header back. Tucked up nice, was pretty even with the subframe. Just another thought or route.?

Re: full exhaust question
sounds good tell me when you find it and i already have subframe connecters they don't run along the side of the body they actually connect to the frame directly is that going to make a difference

Re: full exhaust question
Look at some of the threads, many have built a true dual system, though it's not needed.
You can get a single 3.5" or 4" from mufflex to support just about any power plant.
What intake system are you using? tpi?

Re: full exhaust question
im using a slp high flow intak and i was planing to have 3" exhaust all the way back to a muffler with 3" inlet and dual 2.5" outlet so thats not going to be good for the power im going to produce

Re: full exhaust question
3" will be fine for your setup.
unless your spaying or adding boost, you're not going to be close to 500hp at the wheels, and nowhere near the limit of a 3" pipe.

Re: full exhaust question
yeah, with the parts he has listed so far he will be closer to 300/310 HP at the wheels. He won't be close to the 500 wheel hp he spoke of.

Re: full exhaust question
A tpi 355 will never make that on it's own.
Look at some of the other builds here.
Read a book or two.

Re: full exhaust question
ok that last comment was a little rude but hell i was going to get a 383 rotating assembly from eagle with a mini ram and that should be enough with maybe a different cam will most likely make my goals just fine i was trying to see if i could take another route but guess not i have built engines in the past this one was just tricky so thanks

Re: full exhaust question
Sorry to upset you, but the fact of the matter is your ideas are off. If you attempt to build a 500 hp small block and put a TPI intake on it, you are going to be very dissapointed with an engine that will be impossible to tune and will be nowhere near your goals.
The is nothing wrong with reading to better educate yourself on any subject matter. I have about a dozen books on smallblocks, powe adders, blueprinting and building other engines. I refer to them often.
Lingenfelters Smallblock book is a great place to start.
Even adding a quarter inch of stroke with your planned 383 rotating assembly will not make you reach your 'goal'.
Again if you want to make 500hp to the rear with a smallblock and tpi, its going to take help from N20, a blower or a turbo.
First it was a 355 with SLP runners, now your talking 383 with a mini ram.
Do you have the tools and skills to tune the EFI?
Are you going to swap to an aftermarket EFI?
Like I said, look at what others have done here, many build threads to help guide you along the way.

Check out this months car of the month, engine sounds like something along the lines of what you are wanting to build.
