Best sounding muffler
I have a 1986 Z with the 305 4bbl. The car is completely stock and I plan on keeping it that way for awhile. I would like to swap out the quiet stock muffler though. Anybody have recommendations on a good sounding, fairly loud muffler? I'm keeping the cat and want the muffler to be a factory style replacement. Thanks!

Welcome to TGO! This is a pretty large and helpful forum and most questions can be answered by the "sticky" threads or searching.
This is a good one to start with:

Read through that thread and do a little research to find out what's popular with other members, type in <insert exhaust name here> and Firebird or Camaro on YouTube, plug in some decent headphones and pick a sound!

How many people clicked on this thread to see _if_ by some miracle someone actually has a different "best sounding muffler" question??? why not just read the 60 thousand existing threads already, then ask questions? Not only is the info already here, but you'll get more faster by doing the search than by asking a question.

How is ground clearance on that car (for that matter, where is the rear ride height and how tall are the tires on it, that's the only way ground clearance is going to mean much)?

I personally like the spin tech mufflers.
I also like my home built mufflers

Fender lips are 24 3/4" fronts and 26" rears.
The lowests point of the exhaust is 4" ground clearance. Tim's biggest issue is the oilpan sticks slightly below the kmember since its a 7 qt unit. That also measures 4 1/8".
I would consider this car extremely low with incredible exhaust ground clearance
This is also the most straight flowing mufflered exhaust path I have seen on any thrid gen also. it is basically straight back from the longtube headers (with a T5 trans I should add) and then as you can see it has a few aprox 45* mandrel bends into the straight wide open boomtube exit.
Also, because of neighbors and noise, as well as the motor was not warmed up, when I told TIm to rap it a little he just brought it a little off idle to see the chambers pulse exhaust gas flow out the boomtube. He barely brought the motor up to about 2K rpms. Well have to get video of this thing this weekend with it revving 7K out of the shop area and clear of the complaining businesses next to us.

Re: Best sounding muffler
The fitment of the boomtube was incredible. It practically was molded for the 3rd gen underbelly and pretty much mimicked it staying very tight the entire aprox 30" span towards the side exit.
It opens upward to the wide inlets as it gets near the center trans tunnel like it was made to fit.
