New 3" Intermediate Pipe Installation Finally

O.k., so i'm getting the 3" diameter intermediate pipe to properly mate up with the 3" catalytic convertor.

Been running the factory stock 2 1/4" intermediate for a few years. Maybe now I can get some better flow even though I am still going to use the same muffler for a bit till I get the right one in before this one blows up on me.

Re: New 3" Intermediate Pipe Installation Finally

Bad news on the install. I went to Classic Industries on Friday and picked up the intermediate pipe. When the first counter clerk looked up the part, he seemed a bit confused as to him, there were two sizes for the same part number; a 2.5" and a 3". When the second counter guy called my name to pick up my part, I asked him if it was the 3" pipe. He took out his tape meassure and said yes. So I packed up the pipe into my SUV and off I went.

Come Saturday, I was about to take the pipe out of my car and load it into the Camaro when I figured out to meassure it myself before going to the muffler shop. It meassured 2.5" I was more mad at myself since I should have taken my own tape meassure to Classic Industries in the first place. I called before I went over to return the pipe to get a return number. The guy on the phone checked my customer number and invoice and the part number. He too found it odd about the two sizes for the same part number and told me to bring it on back. Took me two hours with the traffic what would have been a 25 minute or less drive. Got there with a minute to spare.

Yet another counter guy assisted me and said that it was the correct pipe that I ordered and then I explained the two sizes listed on their website. Then he said that it was actually for both a 2.5" and 3" system and if I tried to check it on my catalytic convertor. I told him why would I even bother putting a 2.5" on a 3"? Then he asked me what I wanted to do, so I asked for my refund. There went my Saturday plans. I'll post the description scan I took on Sunday and you can tell me if it does seem like it lists two different sizes.

That intermediate pipe is a Walker stock replacement 2.75 inch i pipe for cars like the L98 cars. I have it on my TTA.

Re: New 3" Intermediate Pipe Installation Finally

Yup, it was a Walker. The one they gave me meassured 2.5". Well either way, I'll get what I want installed eventually. These funky experiences make it all worth it in the end.

Hi MY87LT,

Do you have the 305H engine? Your engine code is in the 8th digit of the VIN on your car. If it is a code "H" and you still have a completely stock exhaust setup, then I believe what you need is our part# 47572 which is a stock replacement intermediate pipe for the 1983-87 305H model.

The part you purchased, item # 46669, is an aftermarket intermediate pipe that is sold as part of a Dynomax (non-stock) Performance Turbo Muffler cat-back system for cars with the VIN code of G or F.

We are out of stock on the 47572, but we can order it for you. Here is a diagram that shows you what I believe is the correct part for your application provided you have a 305 ci engine and your engine code is H.

The pipe should be a 2-1/2" diameter pipe with a 2-7/8" ball flange on the side that bolts up to the cat.

Re: New 3" Intermediate Pipe Installation Finally

It is an "H" engine (LG4). The exhaust on my car is has been modified with 1 5/8" SLP exhaust headers that go into a 3" catalytic convertor with both slip fit ends, that has a temporary adapter at the end that connects to the stock 2 1/4" factory intermediate pipe and muffler.

OK. Please check out the diagram and see if you agree with my synopsis. You may be right about the pipe being 2-1/4" because I see that the clamps listed in the diagram say 2-1/4". If you agree and you would like for us to order it for you, please PM me here and I will have someone in customer service contact you.

Please let me know if we can be of any further assistance.

Classic1 ,

He wants eventually to have a complete 3in. system.
The link I provided above is a perfect example of that including the 3in. exit/tips from the muffler.

Hi Ron,

Oh..... I see what you are saying now. Sorry, I misunderstood. He is wanting to replace it all from the cat-back with 3" for better flow.

So, he eventually wants a complete cat-back system in 3" diameter. But for now, he is looking for the intermediate pipe? Then later he will do a muffler and tailpipes? For some reason, I thought he was saying that he was trying to replace the intermediate pipe and was sold the wrong size pipe.

In that case, scratch what I said. I'm not sure we offer just an intermediate pipe in 3", but I will look into it and if I find something, I will post it here for him to see. Thanks for the comment.

Hi MY87LT,

We checked with several our exhaust suppliers who handle performance exhaust including Flowmaster, Pypes, Magnaflow, Walker/Dynamax and none of our current suppliers are able to supply us with just a 3" intermediate pipe.

The 3" intermediate pipes that are available from our vendors are sold as a set with the muffler and tailpipes and they will not break up a set for us. Additionally, these pipes would most likely require modifications in order to mate them to your stock muffler and tailpipe setup. So, it seems your options are to purchase a complete 3" cat-back system with intermediate pipe, muffler and tailpipes or take the car to a muffler shop and have them fabricate a 3 inch pipe for you.

Sorry that we could not supply exactly what you wanted. But, if we can be of any further assistance to you or if you decide you would like to go with a complete 3" cat-back setup instead, please keep us mind. I'd be happy to help you further if necessary. Just PM us here.

Re: New 3" Intermediate Pipe Installation Finally

Well thanks to everyone for their assistance and feedback.

For now, i'm still going to be on the search for a single piece 3" intermediate slip fit pipe. Someone out there has to be making one that is a direct fit.

Like he said, no one makes just the pipe anymore, that is why I started having them custom made.

Mandrel bent for best flow.
You might be able to find someone with old stock.

I went through this a few months ago. Spent weeks searching online, calling every manufacturer, asking every exhaust shop within 50 miles. Just a 3" intermediate pipe is not possible to buy. Furthermore, even if you can find one, no one makes it in one piece. The bends that go over the axle and into the muffler are too close to each other and the dies will cause a kink in the pipe.
I asked Don and suggested he start making them then. Guess it worked LOL.
