Help, my exhaust system is shot
Help, my exhaust system is shot
Okay so I've been getting things straight with my 89 RS project car for a few months now, and i'm pretty much ready to cut off my exhaust system. Basically, the car is fitted with shorty headers, which are rigged poorly into the rest of the exhaust, and the drivers side header is attached to some U pipe or something that basically hits the ground constantly and i'm afraid it's going to knock the motor off its mounts one day. The actual muffler itself is missing the driver side tailpipe and hangs sideways under the rear of the car. Also the cat is missing completely and a straight pipe was welded into its place basically, I want to cut it all off, and throw it in the garbage! I know running open headers is bad for your car, but i'm wondering what my options are, and i'm considering "cherry bomb mufflers" as a solution. from what i understand i don't really need a full exhaust system to create enough back pressure, just a suitable choke point on the end of the headers. I can't afford much, and I can't fabricate, because I don't have a welder. Any ideas are welcome, thanks.

pictures? there is no cheap was to make an exhaust if you cant weld/fab yourself.
for sure sounds like you will need the proper y pipe for your headers once that is determined you can work you way back.

proper y pipe for your headers

You'll get NOWHERE unless you START HERE. I'd suggest, whatever headers you happen to have, that you contact the mfr and get the correct Y-pipe - NOT "universal" - specifically for this chassis (82-92 F body) BUT NOT for your L03. Instead, if you have a choice, get one either with an unflanged 3" outlet, or the specific one for about a 88 305/350 TPI.
Add a cat to fit whichever Y-pipe outlet you end up with, then a 3" pre-packaged cat-back exhaust. I'd recommend the Hooker one, it fits the car PERFECT and just practically jumps itself up onto the car by itself without any struggles or ordeals at all.

There's NO WAY you can get any sort of "custom" exhaust that will EITHER fit the car better OR cost less. IOW, "custom" = pay more AND get less. Don't even bother.
You can easily install all this yourself with no special tools or equipment beyond just typical wrenches & sockets.

Header back dual 2.25 exhaust. Just add mufflers. On my friend's car, the exhaust mounted up to his shorty headers without any drama.

Also, I'm going to post pics, but not for the next few days at least. I'll drive the car up on the ramps and try and detail what's going on for anyone who's curious about just how messed up my exhaust is lol Joined: Dec 2005

Re: Help, my exhaust system is shot
I agree with the guy above saying to get the correct y-pipe and run a nice catback system. It's going to be a lot better idea long term and it looks a lot more professional/classy. A 3 inch catback is gonig to flow almost as much as dual 2.25's... nowhere near worth the hassle. Get a good system that functions like the factory system and you wont have to worry about it again. The Hooker system is good. That dual 2.25 inch pipe kit requires you to weld it all together. You're not going to be able to just bolt it on.

When you build your exhaust system be sure to install the tips you want on the muffler. After all that's what you're going to be seeing with most CAT back systems. I like the way the Hooker CAT back sounds but really don't care for the tips it comes with. If you like them that's great ,if you don't you can have a shop install a different style.

Get headers that fit the car.
I've had Edelbrock TES and SLP headers on mine, at different times; both fit better than the stock system. Unfortunately both are discontinued now so that doesn't help you a whole lot, except to hold out hope that if you get the right thing, life will be better for you.
I would recommend STRONGLY AGAINST the dual exhaust kit idea. Go put your car up on a lift, and scope out the underneath of it; it will become IMMEDIATELY obvious why. It's AHELLUVALOT of maze you'll have to run, with NO CHEEEEEEZE at the end, compared to a single 3". Clearance to the pavement will be one of the biggest issues; not much fun to put a new exhaust on your car and tear it right off the first time you drive up into your driveway. (yes, it happens, JUST LIKE THAT) Prolly costs more, to boot. Not alot of sense in paying more just to make your life more difficult, eh??

"CHEEEEEEZE" is a tangible benefit when compared to the amount of effort put into a project.

Too late, already have the kit sitting in my work room. I have no idea what "CHEEEEEEZE" is. Considering how clearance was an issue before I pulled this apart, I don't see how it couldn't improve. Now is a good time to post some gore pics of my old system eh? Here's what's left of my "y-pipe"

Re: Help, my exhaust system is shot
cannibaljer, even if you have the kit it may be worth your while to investigate Flowomaster's Y-Pipes. They have one that has 2-1/2" primarys that collect into 3". They also have one that has 3" primarys that collect into 3-1/2".
I used the 3" x 3-1/2" with a 3-1/2" x 3" reducer some years ago. I had to do some modifications to make it work and right handed turn lock was out of the question but it works. Ground clearance was compromised only about 3/4". Never the less I think I'm going to go with 2-1/2" x 3" this time. I"m gonna try and post some pics.
