Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

Hey Orr, have you ever put an oil temp guage in the oil pan when running the shorty style y pipe? I have one in my car, the oil gets very hot. Now Im not sure exactly how hot oil can get before it starts losing its optimum performance but any excessive heat cant be good for it. I have seen my oil at 260.

With a little persuasion, it went in. Fits well, its solid with the hangers in the right spot!

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

Looks sweet. Pretty soon we are going to need a sound clip. lol.... Are you welding it all together? I think I would like a flange after the y pipe so I could easily drop the y pipe to work on trans or shifter ect.. Shouldn't be to hard to add in.

Cant wait to hear it.

We were bored last night so we got out the 72 cutlass and did some big smokey burnouts. There is something about the smell of burnt rubber and cam2. lmao...

Welding the Y pipe yah. Clamp at the collectors and at all the 4" pipe connections. Ill most definitely get that sound clip when available. Within a couple weeks, wont be right away though.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

I just finished final install. All of it lines up as good as it can get. Here's just a couple more pictures.

The battery is dead, oil needs change and valves need adjusting, so I have to find some time to do that. It still might be a week or two before I get a sound clip up. Also, I need to get some clear side shots, the light isn't good enough in my garage to get a good pic of that. I hope my experience here can help you out, any questions just respond here or PM me.

You persevered 25th. Looks great. I bet it's gonna sound awesome. What muffler is that? I'm sure you said what it is but I'm to tired to go back and look for it. Weather is breaking so it's getting closer to cruising time.

Magnaflow. I had flowmasters and wanted to try something new. Im hoping that magnaflow would be a little easier on the ears and not so "rappy"

I have not to be honest and actually should have, especially since goin turbo. Most oils seem to be ok to high 200's deg. Synthetics supposively have alittle higher heat tolerance. Anything over 300 deg would be a real concern. I have added an oil cooler and noticed after a good drive the cooler temp to be around 180 so i believe my oil temps are in check.

Thats why i like idea of y pipe to go under trans converter

Man 25th you could have warned me about how proud muff flex is of there system. I checked out there website last night and saw what they were getting for them, my hand started shaking so bad I splashed Pabst all over my pajamas. lmao... Nice system though. I like the spin tech dual outlet. 762.00 is a lot of cabbage for about 7 feet of 4in aluminized pipe and a dual outlet muffler though, plus shipping.

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

4" pipe isnt necessarily cheap either but hawks has a straight pipe catback in 4" for 399 i think it was. Still need a y pipe then, which makes sense to make your own. Its just that some aftermarket trans x members makes the fab portion abit more difficult. And getting around the subframes is the low clearance problem

Oh yah, they run kinda pricey. I learned elsewhere with my 67 firebird that buying a performance aluminum radiator for $300 was awesome, until I get it in and car kept over heating. I invested a ton of money into a Be Cool radiator in my camaro and temp rarely sees 180 on the hottest days. It'll reach 200 with the A/C on though. Point is I think you get what you pay for. My .02c from my experience

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

Oh yeah I agree. I was just bustin *****.But I am going to price out building a complete home built y pipe and cat back and then decide if I feel like saving myself that kind of head ache or not. If I can buy the material in stainless for 600 or less I might just take on the challenge. If not I will buy this system, I do like it.

I will check it out tomorrow.

is that an o2 bung clocked down on the passenger side? was there a purpose for that? kinda looks like if you would have switched the drivers and passenger sides it would have clocked better for the bungs? just asking. very nice looking system.

thanks for the compliment, however i cannot switch left/right. one of those two o2 pipes have expanded ends on both sides, one has expanded end on only 1 side. The pipes that connect to that are the ones with the "flats" on them, they can only be one way (flat side up). One flat pipe has expanded end in front the other does not, so you really had to go on what those pipes dictated. So the o2 pipe NON-expanded goes on the side with the expanded flat pipe. Know what I mean?

The driver side o2 is at 9:00, slightly before so ill use that and plug the passengers side.

thanx for the explanation. i figured there was a reason. again, nice system.

next time i do an exhaust i might go with something like this. it's got to weigh a lot less than dual exhaust? looks much easier to fab up too?

looking forward to a sound clip one day.

Dude that thing sounds healthy. Exhaust sounds great. I am envious as hell.
Is it really as loud as it sounds on this video? When you get it all dialed in may I request a couple blips on the go pedal? You have got to be pleased with that exhaust, right?

Definitely will get you some rev clips. Its so loud inside my house the walls were shaking. In the video it doesnt have the same affect because in person you can feel the sound, thump of the cam. It sucks, I live in a "quiet" neighborhood and I want to keep the noise to a minimum. When I get it out to the country ill get a little crazier.

Based on my research, magnaflow was anticipated to be the quietest between flowmaster, spintech and magnaflow. Compared to my flowmaster from before, id say thats true but for Spintech I cannot vouch for. Its much less "rappy" that flowmaster.

You can put a resonator in the system, that would quiet it down a ways. I was gonna do that until all the space issues presented themselves So I thought no way.

I got a 404 on your cam info sight. I am looking at a howards cam myself right now. I run a solid roller what is yours? The one my engine builder buddy wants to use is a little tamer than the one I want. But his selection is capable of handling a 150 shot of nitrous beautifully. Mine choice is straight motor and high rpms.

Hydraulic Flat Tappet, I also got Comp Cams 1.6 roller rockers. 1.5's wouldnt clear the spring diameter on my cylinder heads.

Sounds good, what else do you have for exhaust? Prior to this clip I had SLP Shorties + 2-1/2"s into a single 3, Flowmaster 40 series with High Flow Cat before, I thought it was too loud.

Fat case magnaflow or dynomax with a dynomax bullet in the I pipe will tone things down greatly. Try that if you need less volume.

I like the way mine sounds now. it was very very loud before. I might have them do a y-pipe for me eventually. They are only about and hour from me so I can have something custom built for my car by them

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

I just don't want it obnoxious. There are nothing but 55 mph roads around here. So that real loud exhaust will get over bearing I think. The muffler on it now is very quiet. Sounds stock. I want it louder than that but not outrageous. I will have to probably try a couple until I find the one I like. We are getting some where on the motor finally. It's bored and honed and on the engine stand. Wont be long now. I need to get a clutch, mini starter, exhaust and serpentine system over the next few weeks. $ will be flyin out now. lol....

Re: Mufflex Y Pipe + exhaust

If you are worried about drone you can also build a helmholtz resonator to cancel the frequency

I have been following this thread just waiting for the sound clip. That sure as hell did not disappoint! Sounds great, I would get all kinds of attention from the authorities near me though.
