Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Looking to get some input from TGO before i purchase a set of headers in the future. Do I buy Dyno Don's (1-3/4" primaries & 2-1/2" collectors) with his y-pipe OR Hooker 2460's coated (1-5/8" primaries & 3" collectors) with custom y-pipe that's 3" all the way out? Bigger primaries or bigger collectors? Which is better? All input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance TGO!

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Without your current or future engine specs thats im possible to answer............

1 5/8 primaries are only un upgrade if you are running a stockish 305.

Don's setup should be good for 450-500 at the crank..............

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

It is a 5.7 with ported a ported plenum, ported Edelbrock runners and intake, 58mm BBK throttle body, 30lb injectors, Holley AFPR, Comp Cam(CS-266HR-14 lift is .500/.510),Comp Cam 1.6 rockers and Promaxx Vortec heads(185cc intake, 64cc combustion chamber with 2.02/1.60 valves). I hope this helps more. I am pretty positive the answer is Dyno don's. Just want to be sure before dropping the kind of money. So, bigger primaries or bigger collector? Which is better? Thanks MrBrooks and to all others that reply.

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Well this is just my 2cents, but if you flow less air with 1 5/8" primaries, having them feed into a larger collector just doesn't make since. You could have 4" collectors and the bottle neck will still be the smaller primaries. IMO

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Dyno Don's Headers it is! Thanks ringo. My mind was already on Don's. Just needed a little nudge from a couple of people. If Don made his with 1-3/4" primaries & 3" collectors there never would have been a question. Soon after tax returns I will be sending Don a PM.

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Wise choice..........
For general street performance, even moderate strip performance, Don's seem to be the best bet.
Your combo is BEGGING, for a set...

I would LOVE to see head to head dyno pulls ( on a 400ish hp motor ) using Don's setup versus a set of Hooker 2210s....................at that power level, I'd bet you would not see enough gain to justify the hassel of the LTs.................and they will,HANDS DOWN, out perform any off the shelf shorty on the market.

Thanks again MrBooks. As soon as the funds are right, it's a done deal.

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

Or even better, get dyno don headers but get a custom collectors with 3"

That way you have a lot more room to grow.

I had a set of 1 5/8 shorty Hedmans with a custom 3" collector with open exhaust and was running bottom 11's

Re: Bigger primaries or bigger collectors?

It's an idea but I couldn't spend that much money and then modify them. Don's quality is just too good to tamper with. In the future may have to PM Don and see about a getting custom set with 1-3/4" primaries with 3" collectors with a 3" Y-pipe. That would be perfect!
