2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

Anyone notice a distinct sound difference between these sizes? Stock 305 by the way. Sorry if this had already been covered. My search on my app isn't working.

3" is going to be a bit louder and have a deeper sound.

With a 305 (or larger), you do need a 3" exhaust (from the y-pipe on back), otherwise you have a backpressure problem.

That 3 inch deep sound is what I'm going for. I'm buying a summit racing cat back that's all 3 inch but has 2.5 inch tailpipes.. Would u still get the deep sound or no?

Was thinking about maybe going with the summit and replacing the muffler with a MagnaFlow and 3 inch tailpipes..

If your saying that the pipe that is coming from the muffler is 2.5 with 2.5 tips.

A 2.5in. pipe leading from a muffler will not sound like 3in. pipes. The 3in. is what gives it the deeper tone. Besides a 3in. opening from behind just looks killer.

I have the summit 3" kit on my 305 and it sounds good. I get compliments on it all the time.

Does your summit racing 3 kit have 3 inch or the muffler too or just the intermediate pipe?

Mine has the 3" intermediate an 2.5 " exit. It's the SUM-680023 kit, 5.0-5.7.

I'm running the manifolds with no cat. I do have a sound clip, but I don't know how to paste it here with my phone.

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

Sound changes based on the opening, that's why you see hondas running around with huge 4"+ pipes out the back. Going to a 2.5" exit isn't going to be the same as a 3" exit.

That's exactly what I would have. Is there anywhere on the Internet that has it? Can you use the attachments button on the reply menu in the app?

if you have a stock 305 you don't need any bigger than 2.5in

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

What if the Tips themselves are 3" but the pipes leading from the muffler are 2.5" ? Would you still have the loud(er) 3" sound from the 3" opening tips? Or no because of the 2.5" Pipes actually leading from the muffler.I'm soon to be redoing all of my exhaust and i'm thinking of changing over to the Flowmaster 17233 Catback system (80series crossflow with 3" inlet & dual 3" outlets) and want to know if it will be louder because of actual bigger sized pipes in between the tips and muffler. Anyone with some knowledge or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also right now i have a 2.5" pipe running in between my cat and muffler, im going to change to 3" all the way back from the cat, will this make it any louder as well? So basically my new system is going to be 3" pipes from the cat back ( as right now it goes 2.5 to muffler, to dual 2.5 tips.)

thanks all!!!

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

I thought the 3'' exhaust on a stock engine was basically robbing you of torque? from my understanding and what i read up on in the past that unless your engine produces enough power to sustain the larger diameter exhaust, the back pressure wont "be there" I could be wrong i just know how to work on cars not modify to professional standards.

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

I don't want back pressure, I want exhaust velocity or scavenging , but that's neither here nor there , I'm just wondering what sounds going to be like changing my pipes diameter.

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

This is shorty headers into a 3 inch single pipe, gutted cat, and one of the flowmaster rip offs with 2.5 out.

Re: 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust?

FWIW, my 99 'bird (winter car) has the 3800 V6 with 3" pipes and at an idle, it sounds as deep as a 350. But when you wind it up, it still sounds like the V6.
Bottom line, bigger = deeper, but it's not going to make a small, 200 hp motor sound like a 1000hp drag car.
