89 Formula 350 exhaust

Hi all,

I just bought an 89 formula 350 and am going through it. Hopefully someone can help me figure out what exhaust is on this thing. I know its not stock.

The car has the N10 dual cats and the previous owner had those replaced. It has stock exhaust manifolds, the new dual cat setup, and this cat back system with outlets on both sides of muffler as in the pics.

Any help identifying this would be great. I need to know if I should keep it or replace everything when I add headers. Should I remove cats?

Let me know what exhaust you'd do if it were your car.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Looks like a Flowmaster setup to me.

After looking at it closer, I think the pipe from the cats to the muffler is newer than the muffler+tailpipes.......

Re: 89 Formula 350 exhaust

This is a flowmaster muffler. I took the whole thing down over the weekend. The muffler is basically empty and all rusted out on the inside. No wonder it was so loud.

I cleaned up and painted the tailpipes and put in a new magnaflow muffler.

The only odd part is the driver side tailpipe is shorter than the passenger side. Anybody seen this before. I can't seem to get it to look symmetrical.

Where the pipes symmetrical before? Perhaps a difference in the size of the muffler case, and outlet locations between the Flowmatser and Magnaflow. Those may be Flowmaster pipes, and they don't play well with the new muffler?

I bought new pipes as well and they match the old ones. I think I'll try to add a spacer of some sort between the hanger and pipe on the driver side to pull the pipe forward.

The old setup was slightly off too. I wonder if its the final bend in the intermediate pipe that is throwing the muffler off.........
