Headers- the lesser of evils
I've built a Dart based 414 for my IROC with AFR 210 heads. Exhaust seems to be tricky. I currently have Edelbrock TES system (AIR tubes removed) and a Hooker 2460 set. Neither are quite right. Ebks hit my kick out Moroso pan and have other features I don't like but they have been ported at the primary side and match my heads perfectly. Their biggest issue is the way the #2 tube runs up high to the rear. Also, they are crimped down a lot at the collector.
The problem with the Hookers is the port size and shape at the head flange. My AFRs have a square port but the Hookers are oval & narrow. They also interfere with my Lakewook bellhousing but I can get around that issue.
I have already conceded to fabbing my own xover or re-routing both sides. I would prefer long tubes but I have a stick shift and there is a whole other set of issues there so I guess it would be best to go with the shorties.
What I really need are square port 1 3/4 primary shortys. Otherwise I'm left with rewelding the Hookers on the outer side of the head flange and porting them to shape. Then I'm still left with 1 5/8 primarys. Alternatly I can cut my Edels off at the drivers collector and reweld it on. It seems any route I take has problems. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated especially in regard to making the Hookers fit a square port head.
Bear in mind with a big CI engine and 1 5/8 primary headers i need to optimize what I have. So issues like the Edelbrock routing and crimped collectors and the Hookers not matching the ports are issues I feel I need to correct.

I would talk to Dyno Don and see if he can hook you up.

These will work with square port heads:

Re: Headers- the lesser of evils
DD I have a few questions. It appears they are 1 3/4 primarys so that's perfect. Are they stainless or coated? How tight does the drivers side hug the block? My TES headers' collector points directly at the pan kick out and yours look like they're taking the same path. Also, does your xover tuck behind the engine crossmember in front of the pan sump? I may need to hang mine a little lower. Let me know the availability and cost of your setup and if it is available w/o crossover pipe. PM if that is appropriate. Thank you.
