strange exhaust sound coming from pass header only
strange exhaust sound coming from pass header only
This is not a third generation it's a 88 Monte ss with tpi motor swap. This is open headers. But it sounds like I have a header leak but I don't and u hear it the loudest by passenger
This video is very dark like the first. But it starts with me filming the passager side of the block the valve cover area and exhaust. Then when u see the rocks that's me on the drivers side under the car. Then move back to the passage side when u see the blue tarp on the wall. U can tell that the sound is only in the passage side exhaust
sorry for the crappy videos and typing/wording. I hope someone understands what I'm trying to say

Re: strange exhaust sound coming from pass header only
I took some exhaust Temps around the first 6 inches of the headers and right at the flange of the collector. And these r the Temps I got
Cylinders max temp
1 363.2
2 479.6
3 477.8
4 460.7
5 520
6 465.2
7 416.3
8 186.2
Driver collector 177.5
Pass collection 112
y is cylinder 8 so cold and the pass header collector colder. Are the rest of the Temps good and normal

Re: strange exhaust sound coming from pass header only
Sounds like a clicking valve/rocker arm to me. Could just be a rocker nut backed off a tad and that valve needs adjusting.
Or it could be a rocker arm that failed, pushrod hitting, etc etc.
Pull the pass side valve cover off and have a look. My guess is the prob is with the last 2 valves on that side (#8 cyl)
Wiggle the rocker arms side to side.. Wiggle all 8 to kinda get a feel and see if the last 2 feels diff.
Bump engine over a couple times and wiggle them again.
As of right now, I just think it's a valve out of adjustment

Re: strange exhaust sound coming from pass header only
If it was a rocker wouldn't it make some noise at the valve cover? I had my ear damn near on the valve cover and it's silent. But I will look into it tomorrow this is number 1 priority now as I need this car for work. Once I finish the exhaust

That does seem to be awful loud of a knock on the inside of a car with open headers.
Do you have a mechanic’s stethoscope? http://www.harborfreight.com/mechani...ope-69913.html
If not, try to buy one. If you can't get one then get you a long thin metal rod, or a length of rubber fuel hose or heater hose.
Place one end to your ear and start touching the other end around on the engine. Oil pan (of course with car up on jack stands or ramps), starter housing, transmission bellhousing, across the length of the valve covers, fuel pump, water pump, etc
When ever you get to the part making the knocking, you will hear it loud and clear this away.
Also it could still be a header gasket leak at the back (#8 cyl). Some times you think it's sealed and it's really not.
