I've got a strange issue with the lengths of exhaust manifold bolts.

1. I removed the manifolds, and noticed when I went to put them back on that the studs I removed only extended through the manifold and had about a 1/4 inch of thread left to go into the heads.

2. I've measured the length of thread in the heads themselves to be an inch.

3. Only the two shorter bolts near the front of the manifolds actually go into the heads more than 1/4 inch, they go about 1/2 inch.

4. I ordered a hardware kit for the 5.0 exhaust manifolds and these studs also don't seem to screw into the head more than the 1/4 inch, and the bolts that would go on the front two screw into the head way too far, the entire inch.

5. There seems to be a stud disparity on the kit I received. On the car I pulled 2 or 3 studs per side, yet in the kit I received there were only 2 studs per side.

7. Upon removing the manifolds originally there was a bolt or stud broken off flush with the head. I tried using an extractor, which broke, and I had to dremel out the area around it. Luckily there is a full inch of thread in there and I only took out a half inch.

Can someone put the record straight as far as how many studs vs bolts each side should have, as well as the lengths of each one. I'm not sure if this was how was originally, or if someone did a crap job. I did find the passenger side exhaust manifold gaskets to be non-existent. And the broken bolt tends to point me toward some inconsistency as far as the workmanship of the last person who did this.

I'm probably going to have to just hunt down some random bolts and studs from around here and there, and of course the one that I had to drill out will have to be a specific size to reach the thread that is left. My main question is how far are these bolts supposed to go into the heads? There's an inch of thread in there and the bolts I've got only really go in about a 1/4 inch. Thanks.
