Open y pipe

Hey guys. Wondering if anyone runs there car with an open y pipe and how bareable is it? My exhaust is completey fudged from the y pipe back. Currently i have hedman headers and matching y pipe.

This is just a lazy quick fix until I get money for new exhaust probably a month.

Re: Open y pipe

well.. I can tell you its LOUD.. and would be pretty unbearable for extended use..

I know this video doesn't give the whole affect of how loud it really was.. but this is my old Camaro with a mildly built 355 with headers/ypipe and a flowmaster slapped on the end of the ypipe.. it was loud as crap driving it

Re: Open y pipe

Thank you.

I did run open headers at one point. I assume a y pipe doesn't help much

Its horrible, nasty, and extremely loud. When I got my LT1 swap going many years ago I drove it open Y-pipe to the exhaust shop about 50 miles away. I wanted to blow my head off after that trip. The exhaust bounces between the floorboards and pavement. You could not have conversations in the car, it was exceedingly loud.

If you can make up the difference with flex pipe that will work temporarily till you can afford to have it fixed. If not, yes, you can drive it. Its not legal, and a cop might ticket you for it though.

First video is exhaust dump closed.

This video is Open Y-pipe.

Would I have to worry about fumes at all?

Yes you would. At low speeds, or idling at a stop the exhaust is exiting right under the passenger seat, its going to curl up around the car and seep in through any area it can. it will fill up under the hood and the blower will suck in fumes.

it may not be all the time, and it may not seem major, but you will notice after a drive that you smell like exhaust.

My TransAm with the cam and everything being so off tune is bad like that now too, even though I have a full sealed exhaust all the way to the back.

Re: Open y pipe

My rear exhaust separated one day going down the road, pretty much the same effect. At first ti sounded like a huge gasser had pulled up next to me and I started looking around for it before I realized it was me. HORRIBLY loud and obnoxious, took it straight home and welded it up. It had been a clamped connection before but after that I wasn't going to take chances again.
