Interested in headers for my 89 GTA

Hello all! I am in the process of replacing my aging exhaust system with a new one, but my question now is what headers should I get? I want to keep most of the exhaust in the stock configuration with the single pipe going out to the muffler. I don't want to keep the stock manifolds though as I would like to get headers. Should I go for shortie headers or long tube? Also I need the air lines going into the headers as well because the car will not pass visual inspection without them.

Any sound advice would be much appreciated thanks!

You've already answered the basics of your question.

If you want stock routing you HAVE to go with shorties, no other choice.

From there you need to decide which shorties to go with. I was always happy with my hooker 2055's, but they are a PITA to change plugs on. Plug changes took two hours as I had to remove the header bolts and pull the headers away from the heads to get plugs out. Definitely not a plus for maintenance.

You should be looking at long tube stuff, BUT there are NO decent long tube headers unless you are making 500 to 600 hps. Seriously, if you want headers you should look for some short tube stuff like with 1.5 to `1.625" primary stuff, get some primary tubing as well to lengthen them out, get 2 2.5" collectors, and find a local fabricator and have them cut up. Also, look at getting a Headers By Ed catalogue and read everything.
You will want your primaries for the street to be 34" long, and have no more than a 2" tube length difference between your primaries. A good header to look to cut up are the Summit Racing one as well. If you can spend 200 bucks on the Hedman headers to cut up, Those would be good as well.

mid length hedmans will do stock routing also

hedman has 1-5/8 primary long tubes that fit AT and MT

Thanks for the advice! Got hit by Winter storm Jonas so for the time being the GTA is buried. Had to replace my existing Snow Blower because it seized up. So have to put the headers on the back burner for now.
