Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

Hi there,

I have a deal on a complete brand new Borla catback minus the muffler at a good $$$!!! I am searching for the original Borla muffler replacement part number and/or dimensions to custom fit another muffler in this system...Maybe a Borla XR1 race muffler?

Thanks for your time!

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

Hey Borla catback owners, could you please help me at least to get the overall dimensions of the muffler case itself? I would like to buy an XR1 muffler to match the piping systems in order to get the same width between the tail pipes and to fit as a glove...Like I said, there is a guy selling a complete system minus the muffler! I did not purchased it yet so I do not have it in my hands to figure it out!I only have the generic pictures to give me an idea, the muffler seems to be in the same size as any other major brand size outhere, correct me if I am wrong...

Thanks for your time

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

Called Summit and the clerk said there are no listing for the muffler itself...He said I can call Borla but they will most likely try to sell me a complete catback instead!!! Search the net for a over a week now and can't find anything! I am sure I can fit any other muffler with this system!

Could you please, Borla catback owners, help me with the muffler size?

Thanks in advance for your time,

Patrick

I would call Borla. Tell them what your looking for, not a catback but the muffler. They will help you, your still looking to buy their product.

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

So I called Borla this morning! The guy said I cannot buy the muffler itself because it is part of a kit and Borla is a system manufacturer!?! I then said, but you are selling individual mufflers such as the XR1 series...He said I can order a universal turbo muffler replacement which is designed for 4 cylinders, V6 and V8 as well!??! I then mentionned that I have a 383 engine that should run at least at 400hp, he then said that this particular muffler won't suit my needs. He said that the Borla 14888 was designed for a 250HP engine. He added that I should have a true dual exhaust with their Borla XR! race series part number 400373. He finished saying that it would be better for me to find a custom muffler shop that could build me a system because they do not offer any performance oriented system for my application (3rd gen obviously)...

I bought the catback system yesterday minus the muffler. I can't afford to spend more money on another system, so I will fit their XR1 muffler with the system. But at least we all know now that their 14888 catback was meant for a 250HP engine and he said it won't support any combination over 300HP. And their XR1 series can support 400-450 HP with a single 3inch catback, but I doubt it.

If someone have the muffler case dimensions please let me know...

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

Just buy whatever stainless (I love stainless, you already have the pipes) muffler you want, Borla, SLP, Magnaflow, whatever. Any decent muffler shop will fit it into your catback. Is yours the "duel" look for exit or the one side outlet like some of the older borla kits were?
If it's just a one out the back, you can throw in a muffler easy. The duel pipes will call for that type of muffler.

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

It is the dual dual look like the SLP dual dual that came on 4th gen F-Bodys did (as my actual catback) My rear section is still in very good condition but the I-pipe has 2 holes in it and rusty as hell! It is very particular to Borla which have a single inlet/outlet, with a cutout on the passenger side tailpipe. Now that I am reviewing pictures on Borla website, I think I am missing a little bent tubing part of the kit! Damn! If I am not mistaken, the case should have an overall 22-24 inch length

If your missing the cutout pipe, for the exhaust tip on the passenger side, you could just build the exhaust like the 2OTL outlet exhausts like the old SLP. That way you can throw in a simple single in/out muffler. Amy exhaust shop could get that in for you.

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

Yeah thanks for the input but I am missing the driver tail pipe to muffler 90 degre pipe. But I don't really like the look of the Borla's tail pipes so I may do an SLP TOTL look instead...

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

If your going to get a simple single in/out muffler, look into Carven, they are relatively new (1-2 years going), stainless, sound crazy and unique, and pretty much nobody with a thirdgen will have your sound. Just get one and take it to a decent muffler shop, they should be able to fab you up a simple finish to your exhaust.
Then, get some video clips posted up here.

Re: Borla 14888 catback muffler P/N

I just looked at the Carven's R and TR mufflers on youtube and I must admit that they do sound great! Only heard them on trucks tho but it gives a good idea. But I already ordered a Borla 40944 muffler yesterday...I may consider doing a true dual on my suburban when I change my actual single 3" SLP exhaust...Thanks for the input!
