Exhaust Leak

I recently installed a 3' Flowmaster cat-back exhaust on my LG4. When I bought the car, the exhaust was all stock. The previous owner had deleted the stock catalytic converter and put a pipe in it's place. I bought a low-restriction catalytic converter to put in place of the cat-delete pipe. When I installed the catalytic converter (3 inch diameter) on the old pipe (which is 2 1/4 inch diameter) I now have an exhaust leak. I don't have the strength or the tools to compress the catalytic converter over the old pipe and was wondering how to go about fixing the problem. Should I take the car to Meineke and have them weld it? Or is there a way to fix the leak with my basic tools? Thanks!

Re: Exhaust Leak

An exhaust shop should be able to make the adapters you need, or you may be able to buy them and install them yourself. They should look something like this.

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably look into one of these adapters for sure.

Re: Exhaust Leak

Most autoparts stores carry a variety of adapters cheaper than that but they are usually thin walled alumnized piping. If this car ever sees any salt make sure to get nicer stainless ones like the ones listed.

I'll definitely make sure I get stainless adapters. I live in the North-East and the salt gets pretty bad. Thanks.

Re: Exhaust Leak

I can't seem to find 2 1/4' to 3' adapters online. Does anybody know where to get something like that? (They probably don't make those and/or I'll have to go to an exhaust shop)

Re: Exhaust Leak

Aluminized steel, which I have had very good luck with. But in a quick search, I'm not finding them in stainless. Keep digging...they are out likely out there.

Re: Exhaust Leak

don't forget pipe and adapters come in I.D., (inner diameter),.. and O.D., (outer diameter). not sure if you were aware?

you can also use multiple adapters if for some reason you cant find your size. example; 2.25-2.5,...then 2.5-3". might even give it a smoother transition.
