Header Advice

Car is a 1987 IROC Z with 350 TPI.
So after some research I decided to go with a set of hooker headers. But do i go with Shorty Headers as there seems to be some clearance issues with Long Tube headers?
I will be replacing the Y-Pipe as well. So do I go 3" to 2-1/4" is that correct?
I replaced from the CAT back last year and pretty sure it was a 3" Y-Pipe that was on the Car. Its in storage and I am away working so cant check exactly.

I can get a good price on a new set of MagnaFLow Headers and 2.5" Y-Pipe from my Buddy who drag races and has his own little Performance shop. Whats the verdict on MagnaFlow? Overall between Hooker and Magnaflow I am looking at $210 more for the Hooker Header and Y-Pipe over the Magna Flow.

Re: Header Advice

Typically try to get the matching brand header/y-pipe combination. I know a dougs y-pipe will go with hooker shorty headers. I'm not sure magnaflow will fit it perfect.

Re: Header Advice

Yes they will be matching parts for sure. Just want to make sure the magnaflow doesnt loose HP on my Engine and that the Shorties are the right way to go?

Re: Header Advice

Magnaflow makes thirdgen headers? Not finding anything on their website. You're not thinking Flowtechs? MF made a y-pipe, but last I looked it's discontinued and it was meant for stock manifolds anyway.

Which Hookers? The 2460s are OK, the Y-pipe they offer necks down to 2.5" after the Y. It can be cut where it necks down and weld a 3" extension on it to the cat. By all accounts the Dougs D901 is the same thing as the Hooker Y-pipe for $100 less.

Re: Header Advice

Yes the 2460s, and I asked him to price the Hooker Shorty Header and he gave me that price and came back and told me a price for magnaflow as well. Thanks for the info on the other y-Pipe!
I'll get him to check into it further!

Re: Header Advice

Both the dougs and hooker Y pipe really suck after the merger. They neck down horribly. I would cut off the area after they merge and weld on some 3" pipe

Re: Header Advice

Good to know about that bottle necking. Thanks
I just have to verify what my Exhaust diameter size is from the Y-Pipe back. Is stock 2-1/4" ?

Re: Header Advice

2.5" to the merger then 3" all the way after that. Add in a resonator if you like. Finish off with the muffler of your choice.
