Longtube Headers and Installation - 85 Trans Am

Looking to go with a set of eBay headers for my current build. I have read thru some of the long eBay header threads on here and would like some more recent info. Most the links are sold out header systems and I was wondering if these are the "same" as the other knock offs:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/332237660452...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

and what type of crossmember do I need with these from those of you have installed these type of headers

I wouldn't put 1.75" primaries on a 305. I wouldn't even put them on a stock 350. You're going to lose too much bottom end torque, and it's going to move your power band up to where it's you're not going to be able to make the most of it (you're probably going to lose power everywhere. Now, if you're going to replace heads and cam, then they may not be as bad.

That's my bad, my info on the side is for my 87 and I didn't think to layout the plan for this 85, it is in another thread I started recently but for a quick rundown the exhaust I am looking to run is going on a 383 sbc with trickflow 195s and xe282hr cam.

Are you sure about that cam? I'm showing that's a 5.0 ford cam. I hope you mean the XR282HR cam. Just took a look at your build thread. It should be fine for you. Comp cams has a pretty good FREE program on their site that helps with cam selection and tells you what ball park you should see for your power curve for what cams.

Whew, you're car wouldn't have been very fast with a ford cam in it. It's alright, it's your car. Put what you want in it, even if it is a ford cam :-P Those headers should be could with your setup. Are you going to try to do duals, or are you going to do 3" to muffler after the Y?

Re: Longtube Headers and Installation - 85 Trans Am

I would like to set up the LTs with a y and hook to an older catback 3" I have. Then when I can do more mods I'll install the panhard relocating kit and run dual pipes from the headers back. Between the hedmans and eBay stainless knock offs which typically fit better with stock suspension and 700r4?

Are the primaries 1.75" OD or ID?

Wouldnt that mean that Dyno Dons headers would hurt more people than those that swear they've been helped by his headers?

The Speeddaddy ones are OD.

1-3/4" OD / 2-1/2" OD / Y-pipe 3" OD

With an L98 with some mods it wouldn't really hurt it, but 1 5/8" should be best. With a 305 like a majority of third gens, you would have less bottom end torque than with 1 1/2" and 1 5/8" primaries. Your top end would be higher with 1 3/4" but without cam, intake and heads it's a waste of money, and you will have less usable hp and tq than with 1 1/2 or 1 5/8. For a stock 305, or even a mild automatic I'd go with 1 1/2" unless you change the torque converter too.

Piecing together an engine with go faster parts does not always make your car go faster unless match the parts at least somewhat. There are some people on here with 1 3/4" primaries on a 305 running high 15's in the 1/4 mile, that with the mods they've done should be running be running 14's but they have 1 3/4" longtubes.

For a street engine, where most of your driving is under 3500 rpm, 1.5" shorties are about where you'd want to be at. For a performance 305, stock or L98 with a slightly better than stock cam, 1 5/8" would still leave you with bottom end power, and keep your engine breathing to red line. 1 3/4 you'd breath past red line, but have a loss of low end torque. Sorry if I'm repeating too much. I'm tired and don't feel like rereading all I've typed.
