What exaust is best for me

OK Im going to be honest here and say I don't know a lot about working on cars. I just got a 91 Z28, 305TPI with ttops and some nice rims. I don't want to do a lot of mods to it but I would like to put on a more free flowing exuast. I would like as much performance increase as possible, but I don't want a really loud aggressive sound increase. I would like some but I don't want it to "shake the house when starting in the garage" as one guy on here put it. The car is going to be driven around the city and on short trips in the country for driving fun. Its not really going to be an everyday driver. I don't really care about uniqueness either. Some guys say there is too many flowmasters for example and they want to be different. I don't give a rats @ss about being different, I just want a little more HP, and a nice deep rumble when I drive. From what ive read so far the Hooker cat-back system sounds good, but I dont know. Im pretty sure I dont' want headers (to much noise). I assume this system consists of piping from the Catalytic converter to the tailpipes. I kind of like the looks of the dual chrome tips too. I assume I could buy this and put it on myself. I do have a newly purchased floor jack and jack stands.

Well, if you want a more free flowing exhaust, you're going to need headers. I would get headers before a cat-back, because really you don't need a 3" exhaust until you're around the 250-300hp mark. However, the stock manifolds and y-pipe are a joke on these vehicles and are more restrictive than your stock cat-back. If you want to get the cat-back anyways, the Hooker outflows the flowmaster.

I think your right

I spoke to my wifes cousing today who knows a lot about this subject and he said the same thing. I thought headers would always be really loud but he said not necessarily. My car just failed the emission test here in Texas today so Im kind of at a decision point anyway. It has a singel catalytic converter and a stock cat back setup. If the cat is bad he suggests getting headers (i really don't know what kind) a Dynomax cat, then going with the Hooker cat back system, doing it all at once. If I do this what size cat back system and I guess there is still a choice of dual vs single cats and exaust right? Whew. The more I get into this the more complicated it gets.

emission test in texas, kinda scary. headers made my car real loud and gave it a different tone.

OK, check out these headers on ebay. They are hooker shorty type. Now am I understanding this right, just because I get headers like this, I dont' have to have a dual cat setup, right? I can just use the headers, a larger y pipe to the Dynomax hiflow cat, then the hooker cat back setup that goes to two pipes after the muffler, yes?. Please say yes.

Are those Hooker headers coated, cause I thought those headers sold for $99. But don't forget you will need prolly another $75 for a new y-pipe. Then you can get a universal cat, Catco might be the cheapest. Just check www.summitracing.com . I don't see the need for 2 cats then order the Hooker cat-back. What I did, since my y-pipe wasn't stock, I ordered the cheapest Hooker $200 and had it welded on. Good luck.
