i have a set of hooker competition shorties i still havent put in yet...if i run a reducer and then have a y pipe made off those how much you think an exhaust shop would charge me? also i have seen those sections of pipe that go behind your headers that allow you to remove a plate and switch to open exhaust (hope you all can understand what im trying to say...) those worth it? also will a car with those pass inspection...(not smog inspection WV state inspection...they check brakes, lights, horn, and make sure the exhaust is in good shape..stuff like that)

A lot, installing headers takes time... That said time is money. Some headers can take anywhere from 2-7 hrs to install depending on the capabilities of the mechanic. Regardles you'll be paying the amount of time it takes the particular mech to install them.

On my friends car when we put the new engine in put the headers on too. Then we drove it with open headers to an exhaust shop to have a y-pipe made, and to have new pipe run back to the muffler from the cat since his was rotten.
They charged us $155 for a custom y-pipe and a new intermediate pipe. They didn't have to do anything but weld and bend new pipe though. We supplied the reducers too.

An exhaust cutout is a great way to increase your torque at the track. Some of them are even cable or electronicaly operated (I'm trying to find a 3" cable operated one as we speak). As mentioned on other posts... if you run with it open all the time, you'll be sure to be pulled over, at least in VA (damn VA laws). If you are looking for hp though, stay with a cat-back. VA doesn't check emmisions, and I don't know about WV, but cutouts are ilegal here. You can always go to your favorite inspection station and hope that they "overlook" it for a nice tip.

Where's that automatic device that slaps anybody that says "backpressure = torque"?
