Exhaust clearance needed under axle
Exhaust clearance needed under axle
I have a 87 Camaro and spent a lot of time adjusting the exhaust system to get my best ground clearance without it rattling under the car. I ended up with only 1 1/2 inch clearance under the axle. It has a 2 1/2" exhaust system. Is that enough clearance. Thank You.

Can you post a couple of pics of what you're describing here?

Re: Exhaust clearance needed under axle
Under the axle is easiest and less bends for less flow loss, i have done it often. But 1 1/2 inches is way low with 2.5” piping. I had twice that clearance with single 5” exhaust
or am i reading this wrong...1.5” clearance from exhaust pipe to ground right? Or do you mean axle to exhaust pipe?

I vote for tucking it up tighter so that the axle can never droop. I mean if you're going to do it then why half-*** the job?

1.5” below axle should still be way more than enough off the ground. You ever see how low lower control arm relocation brackets sit below axle tube?. Even stock control arm, plenty of clearance. If you arent lower than that you shouldnt worry

Control arms are attached to, and move with the axle. Exhaust is not. My axle will drop as far as the shocks will allow, which is a pretty long ways, when the car is on jack stands.
That's 200 lb of axle resting on the exhaust tubes, plus half the weight of the torque arm, control arms, and driveshaft, plus any remaining spring compression force at 180 lb per inch in my case.

Well obviously you wouldnt hang the axle up on jack stand with this setup lol on the road you shouldnt be getting that much suspension travel so the exhaust should be fine. I havent seen any issues on 3 setups i have done under axles

Fun group of supporters here, thanks for the response Orr89RocZ, I can raise it another inch and will let you know how it turns out. If I have a problem I have the option of side exit exhaust in front of the rear wheel well.
